Going from 14" steelies to 17" rims


will this effect gas milage quite a bit ?


i think i used to get 500+ k on my EG civic

and now i seem to be gettin 350k



but i was also thinking that it could be the air filter needs to be changed or a new fuel pump


any ideas ?

I don't think having different wheel and tire package will effect your gas milage. I remember in 1996 when I switched from 13" steelies to 15" rims and tires didn't effect my gas milage at all. Are your driving behavier the same when you had the 14's than right now with the 17's? Must be something else.

yes bigger rims and tires do affect your gas mileage. also do a tune up and you'll see that your gonna get a lil more kms per tank

^ Wouldn't be that much, would it? We're talking 150 kms less.

More rolling resistance due to the heavier wheel and tire combo would decrease mileage. 14" steelies with tires probably only weigh 35lbs tops. A 17" with tire would weigh close to 50lbs or more unless they are light-weight Volks or something similar.

Also, if the size of the 17" tire is too big in overall diameter it can alter the odometer reading giving incorrect readings.

yeah, I can totally see a drop in mileage like that if the rims/tires are heavy. more rolling resistance, more unsprung weight, more wind resistance, more rotational mass..... it's just all bad. there is nothing good about big rims.

Yeah its always a tradeoff. The bigger wheels are always tempting, escpecially after spending a day at mosport watching 911's all day, but I've always found my car feels better with 15's and some good tires than anything else.

I don't see 150km difference coming from that. Take 185/14 and compare it to 205/40/17 yes there is more rolling resistance and yes there probably is an extra 15lbs per corner, but 150km. Going from 195/55/15 to 205/40/17 I did not really notice any difference, minimal stuff maybe.

150 sounds more like a tune-up issue possibly exaggerated by the larger/heavier wheels.

when i went from 14" steelies to 17" rims i dont think i have even noticed a decrease in mileage, in a few tanks ill drive normally and see what the difference is

you're prolly driving more aggresively cuz you think ur super tuner sport boy now cuz u have mo iller rims y0!, lay off the gas and drive like normal

actually i had rims on last season and i drove the same way as i did then adn im getting worse milage now........... i just bought new ones and the gas milage is consistant every time i fill up and drive the tank down
