from what i've heard it's just because it's hard on the tranny and it's a big shock because you're directly engaging the tranny into gear as opposed to manual where you have a clutch... :shrugs:

actually alex, even a manual tranny you shouldn't be putting into gear while rolling. esp putting it into reverse while rolling.

its just common sense.
if the gears inside the tranny are moving one way and then you want them to go another way without comming to a full stop guess what your doing? your forcing it in and what happens then? there is a big shock to the system.

same like pretty much anything mechanical.

bruno, what if you do it while you have your clutch in but come to a dead stop before you engage it does it have bad effect son the tranny too? i guess the synchros maybe?

Not that i do any of that lol i'm just curious

no, that's fine, dead stop before you engage is fine. I do it with the auto tranny too, I drop it out of reverse into neutral, then stop, and put it in drive. and same with my manual tranny.
