Reverse gear problem.

ok so i was driving my car and attempted to reverse into a friends driveway. the only problem was my car would not go into reverse. i tried letting up the clutch a bit, revving on it and using substantial force but it would not engage in reverse. i ended up driving the car home and trying to get into reverse again but no luck so i parked it in my garage. about 10 minutes later i attempted to see if the car would go in reverse when the engine was off, and it did. so i started the car in reverse and it seems to be okay now except when you try to move the shifter from reverse to neutral it seems a bit harder then usual... should i check my transmission fluid or what should i do? any ideas are welcome i know its kind of tough to distinguish the problem from what I have told u but basically tonight was the first night I had brought the car out all season. any help is appreciated.

i'd start with new tranny oil, its prolly been a while since you changed it, most people don't change it as often as they should.
But, honestly, thats a common thing with hondas....my guess is b/c if you've ever taken a honda tranny apart you would see how tiny and rediculously small the reverse gear is and the fact that there isn't a syncro for reverse (there isn't really a need for one b/c its not like you should ever need to sycronize reverse with any other gear b/c you should be stopped before trying to ram it in reverse).
Next time, try puttin the car in neutral, letting off the clutch, putting the clutch back in puttin it in 1st then 2nd then back into 1st, then try puttin it into reverse....usually works for me.

i always do that before i put it in reverse. im gonna try changing the tranny oil but this time the shifter would not go into reverse... no matter how hard i pushed lol. and now it seems fine... its so weird. thats for the advice tho.

I've had my civic since 2002. 2 different engines, same problem with reverse. The trannys ran mint and still is

thanks for your help guys i realize its tough to understand my problem from this but i do know that i need to go 1st gear then reverse or 2nd then 1st then reverse and all that... im familiar with honda transmissions. wat happened was i was unable to get it in reverse NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRIED!!! lol and now it feels rough when disengaging from my reverse gear. im thinking maybe my shifter linkage is bent or something but im not 100% sure.

if you cannot get your car out of reverse or in reverse it is not considered mint.. but okay.
