replacement motor

Hey guys, im new on this forum an was wondering if i could get some feedback from some of you. Heres the deal. I got a 91 civic si with roughly 360,000 klms on it. The motor had most deffinetly seen better days, but to make a long story short, will not be living for much longer lol!
My question is what motor would u recommend me putting into this car? My budget is roughly around $2000.00 bucks an would like to try something Vtec...... or not. Any suggestions would be great.

you should be able to easily find a decent/good 1st gen b16 for that price installed.

what are your plans for the car? If its just A to B, i'd probably go with something like a ZC, you can do that for cheap.. if you want a little more power, then yeah B16A1

Why does everybody always recommend the b16a1 right away? They are usally overpriced motors that are beat to death half the time. You can pick up B18a1 for so much cheaper and in an EF they rip like you wouldnt belive. I have raced another EF hatch before with b16a1 with the proper ECU, and way better tires then me and both races we basically stayed even the whole time. All im saying is the b16a1 is a great motor but its not the end all be all of honda motors, and plus for this guy to swap in a b16 it means some extra wiring, and ECU swap or remapping where as if he drops in a 1990-91 LS motor then it will basically plug right in and he can retain the stock ECU.

Not unless you get a used one from someone. Mounts, shift linkage, drivehafts, rad hoses, throttle cable, wiring and the install will bring you well abve the 2k budget.

honestley u need to think about how important it is to get this car back up and running. To replace a motor on a 91 civ with milage through the roof, ur not gunna get any money when u resell it. A car is an investment (to a degree) so if u gunna spend $2000 on a motor, IMO u have 3 options get a b16, get b18 (and enjoy it for what it is) or sell the car for whatever u can,and take that 2g's (lus any other money u make on the car)and buy something else.... to replace a stock motor in a car like that in all honesty probley isnt worth it unless u know what u are doing and arent paying labour.... just my .02!!!

Remeber not being negative, but u asked for a suggestion!!!

my cuzin got a d15 put in his 91 hatch and it was really nice, everything said and done (new clutch,t.b,w.p) it cost him around 1700 at splitfire. 1400 for just the engine swap.

d swap for 1700?! but i think invader has a good point here. sell the hatch for whatever you can get for it and buy something newer like an EG or even an EK if you're lucky. b16s are overpriced, you can get a b18 for cheaper and it will be better to drive around town because you won't have to rev the **** out of it to get some power like you do with the b16. i saw someone in classifieds selling b18b complete for 1100 i think.

edit: http://www.torontocivics.com/tccforu...highlight=b18b

here we go. it's obo so offer him cheaper and you still have half of what your budget is left.

I don't understand why he should sell it? Why can't he just do the same engine swap on his current EF/ED? I always thought they were just as capable.

Everyones quick to recommend something that will put him way over his budget.

A b-series swap requires a lot more parts that just the motor. All of the extras that he needs to pick up can take up half his budget right there.

Stock replacement motor or maybe a single vtec, save the rest of your money. Call around local shops and see what they'll charge you.

drop in the b18 (first gen) for more torque and cheaper...
or b16 if you want more hp instead of the torque and a bit more...

there are some first gen b16 around the board for 1500-2000... you might be lucky to have everything installed for 2000-2200... but again, if you're buying such things... some parts might need replacement.... look into the seals, gaskets, pumps, belts... then see if the mounts are good.... and usually motors for cheap, those parts will need replacment
