Replace Dizzy?

i took off the cap on my dizzy to change it today since i got Bryce's extra one off his other dist, but it wasn't the correct size. sooo, that's not happening...

but i noticed inside, that there was like red dust everywhere and a bit of corrosion on i think the rotor (like little jagged teeth on the round piece that i believe spins inside)... plus, there is a crack in it just where one of the cap bolts go... i don't think its cracked where the sealed part is, just over the screw. i have been having some starting problems like when the engine is warm its like all cylinder's don't fire up and sometimes it runs off two barely keeping alive then all 4 kick in and it idles perfect... it seems to run fine, but then again, its always done the starting thing... once it gets going, its perfect and i have no problems with it... its just the initial start-up... plus, it also smells like unburnt fuel when it messes up like that... so i am just naturally assuming bad spark. and my mileage is pretty ****ty... i was gonna do plug cap, rotor and wires and plugs... should i change the whole distributor or should I just do the tune-up? ju

Usually the red dust is a sign that the distributor is about to go. I would definetly look into getting a new distributor to save any hassels down the road. Since you need a new rotor and cap anyway it doesn't hurt. At the very least change the rotor and cap. But you can get brand new distributors from Distributor King in Quebec for like $150 (Well Worth it IMO) I bought mine from there and it comes with a lifetime warranty.

d-series or b-series??

teknotik has them brand new for pretty cheap check out there site i saw the dseries for like $120-$150 i think cant remember but it was like a month or so ago.

i personally would do the tune up and see the difference it makes. as you will end up replacing the cap rotor and plugs anyways if you put on the new dizzy, instead of throw ing old crap on the new dizzy.

buy the smaller stuff before the big stuff.

this is just my opinion tho.

the last two dizzy's i've seen with red dust in the cap had the bearing seize on them.
When mine went it started squealing at idle and lower rpms. The noise was pretty loud, then after a few days the noise got really loud, so i parked the car, got a new dizzy and when i took the old one it, the bearing was completely siezed. I'm really glad i didn't try to start the car 1 more time. If the distributor bearing is siezed since the dizzys attached to the intake cam, if you try to start the car it may cause the timing belt to skip a tooth and can possibly cause serious engine damage.
The same thing happend to my buddy, he went to the track, the bearing started squealing on the way home, replaced it the next day and it was completely siezed. His car squealed really loud as soon as it started making any noise and was siezed the next day (there was lots of red dust in his dizzy cap). Mine started squealing quietly for about a week (i checked and there was lots of red dust), then got really loud so i parked the car until i could find a new dizzy, good thing, b/c i couldn't even rotate it by hand when i took it out.
