Removing stock exh. mani heat shield

Like holy crap...
Just got my alternator done
And as soon as i leave garage i hear some new rattling from under the hood

I had rattling before, it was the exhaust heat shield...

Now, I'm thinking this new noise might be coming from the exhaust manifold heat shields....

So anyone ever remove the bottom one, I think the top one is easy to remove, but I heard the bottom one is tougher...

any past experiences?

Caution

dont remove the rear one lol ... I just went through all this crap... My ebrake cable seized up from the expanding and contracting of the rubber caused by the heat from the exhaust (cuz i removed all my heatshildes du to rattleing last season)...

actually dont remove any of them replace the bolts with stainless hardware!!

the heat will fry all your undercarrage bolts and maker them a bitch to remove someday, pluse the heat will cause more rusting... just fix it do it right.

dont say i didnt tell you so!

Ill be waiting for a dito from bbarblo lol

hmm...well the holes around where the heat shield is held by the bolts are rusted through as well, so the bolts they do nothing..

actually I realized just 5 mins ago there's no points removing the bottom one

but the front one i wanna get rid of...is that gonna do any heat damage to anything?

I've seen many people w/ out them...so i dunno..
reply!

Look, a little high heat antiseize on the bolts, a little high heat gasket material (permatex gold) between the heat shield and the header - and voila; no more rattles.

what exactly does that heat shield do ? if you take it off wouldn't your header be cooler and so would your block from the air blowing in over the rad its not that hot of air ???? or is it to keep heat in ?

i think the head shield absorbs the heat and gives it a larger surface area to disapate... I think its no to keep heat in or out but away from other components..... Nothing definite just some thoughts

so what are you saying (i don't have a header..just stock exh. mani.), DO not remove the top heatshield? Or just do not remove the bottom exh.mani. heatshield, which im not going to remove, just wanna get rid of the top one

and bbarbulo...ur plan won't work, cause it rattles, because the bottom 4th screw, does not touch the heat shield, since the heat shield has a hole rusted completely through

Pick up a new heatshield at the dealer, they are pretty cheap.

white and Brett, the heatshield keeps the hot exahust where it's supposed to go... through the exhaust. The hotter the exhaust, the faster it gets out, as the gas cools, it slows down. A heat shiled reflects heat back into the header rather than under the hood. Under the hood, the temps can increase significantly w/o a heat shield, and this makes your rad less efficient, the intake air warmer, not to mention hardening wires and hoses that will later cause problems (vacuum leaks and electrical probs).

Bottom line is, just cuz YOU don't know why it's there, doesn't mean it doesn't belong there. There is NOTHING on a Honda that doesn't serve a purpose.

Great example... my car came w/o any air conditioning... so there is on rad and one blank spot. In the blank spot there was a blockoff plate clipped in so that no air went through. I thought this was stupid!! Why NOT allow air through there to provide some underhood cooling??? Well, later when I learned more about thermodynamics and fluid behaviour... then I figured it out. By allowing air through the open space, you are actaully reducing the airflow over the ACTUAL EFFECTIVE cooling area - the rad so the fan had to kick in more often. Needless to say, I put everything back to the way I found it from the factory.

i think the heatshield around my high flow cat is rattling. It's unbelieveably annoying. I can't rev past 3500-4000rpm because it embarasses me.

Bbarbulo...lol..I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean..
Today when I got an impact air gun to undo the screws, and take off the upper heat shield, i saw that piece of plastic as well, and i wondered the same thing, then i realized what its purpose was..Also it supposedly keeps dirt and **** from coming in. I was gonna remove it too but realized i shouldn't.

So i took the heat shield off, undid the 02 sensor then plugged it back...

And shlammed, my cat heat-shield was doing the same thing, i remove it about a month ago as well..no more rattling!

Lol after all this! THERE IS STILL RATTLING!! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

Im gonna jack the car tomorrow and look at every single lil piece of metal I can find...this is really bothering me!!!!

But at least I'm eliminating every source...could also be the lower heat shield!!!

this is so frustrating

oh yah and I let my rad breath out the air bubbles today, I think the previous owner got a rad from SPi (i thinkt hat's what it's called), and they didn't flush it properly, so many air bubbles came out of the rad coolant today..crazy
