Question To reduce/muffle sound on a exhaust pipe (a little homemade)

Say, you have no muffler. But you have a cat., and a mid pipe with resonator on.

At the mid pipe end, where the flange bolts on to the axle back, you make a plate that bolts onto the 2 flange holes and covers the pipe completely. Then you drill a hole in the plate, say 1.5" (if the pipe is 2.5"). Or multiple 1/2" holes... etc

Do you think it will muffle the sound? Since the exiting diameter is reduced?

I think it will create a lot of back pressure, not sure if it would reduce the the sound though. Seems like it...

i thought of the same thing....cuz the flow will be restricted.

research the way a muffler works and their design and you will understand why this won't work so well.

Muffler muffles by making the exhaust gas travel in bands to reduce sound and flow speed.

But look at some of the aftermarket silencers, i.e. Spoon

This piece works, not whole lot, but it does reduce sound. The tip is what reduces the inlet size, wouldn't that be the same concept as capping the pipe with a hole in it?

The concept is for street use, and remove cap at track. IF, a muffler cannot be found/used with the mid pipe.

actually mufflers work by creating sound waves that will cancel each other out. There are many types of mufflers, the straight through type (or glass pack) work by having some of the sound waves absorbed by the insulation.
Heres a pretty good link on how mufflers work. Its not as simple as decreasing the size of the pipe the gas is flowing through.

Yes yes. I have a couple links I read before but couldn't remember all the facts.

Thanks

mm, I guess this idea is crossed off the list then.

How about running a second catalytic convertor as a muffler?

It's like putting a piece of tape over your dick with a pin hole and trying to pee. If you dont want it loud, put another resonator on and put on a muffler. Or a cat, a 24" cherry bomb or thrush style thing, and a muffler.
