Rebuilding Engines

How much does it usually cost to rebuild an engine?
say a b series motor with vtec. assuming there is nothing wrong with it just want to give the motor a complete clean start with all stock parts.

Now lets define "clean start"

Top and bottom? or just new valves and guides, cam bearings seals, fresh bore and pistons? water pump and timing belt...

or

Total rebuild: Replace main bearings and seals, connecting rods, re-true crank, pistons, fresh bore, oil pump, water pump, replace valves, guides, seals and springs, camshafts and followers etc..?

rebuilding an engine isn't cheap...at all.
I'm in the middle of rebuilding a b20 and i can give you some prices i've paid for parts from honda (some prices may be off b/c i don't remember completely)
Rings - $250
Rod bearings - $100
Main bearings - $100
Gasket set - $150
Oil pump - $250
Water pump - $120
Timing belt - $100
Valve seals - $100
Valves - (intake $17 each) (exhaust - $25 each)
Balance crank - $100
Valve job - $100
Resurface head - $60
Now this is just the minimum that would be done while rebuilding an engine. I didn't have to bore/hone the cylinders b/c they were in good shape so that saved me another $100 plus the cost of oversized pistons/rings (at least $400 for pistons). I honed it myself with my honing tool. And i am saving A LOT doing all of the work myself. I've been quoted $900 for assembly.
So thats about $1400 not including the cost of 16 valves b/c i didn't have to replace those on this engine but i have on another b/c a few were bent so i know what they cost new from honda, i would only replace the valves if they were damaged. And that price doesn't include the cost of bore/hone/new pistons or assembly, so add another $1300 for that plus i am sure there are other costs that i haven't accounted for...and tax.
So ya rebuilding an engine, even if you do it yourself (or what you can) is expensive....especially if you're going to rebuild it for boost....wink wink jay.
