Rebuilding an engine DIY?
Well as some of you may know one of my cars died (no compression) due to I believe the timing belt skipping.
I paid 2 grand for the car, and well, it's maybe worth 500 now, so rather than take a 1500 loss I was thinking of just keeping it, and just messing with it and try to maybe take apart the motor and rebuild it. Downtime is obvoiusly not an issue as I always have another car or 2 I can drive.
What i'm basically asking is... is rebulding an engine something really difficult, taht I won't be able to do because I'm a newb.... or is it somewhat simple but takes a lot of time, etc.
I would obviously have an experience person who can help me a lot of the time.
And yes, for those of you have asked I did think about just swapping an engine. But once you do that then you have to do a timing belt/waterpump, etc and take it all apart anyways, plus it would be a pain in the *** for me to get a hoist and re wire everythign so I thought it might be easier to work with what I have.
Let me know what you guys think.

well if your timing belt broke your pistons most likely smashed your valves, so you will need new valves (possibly 16 of them) and quite possibly new pistons, b/c its possible they were damaged from smashing into your pistons. In which case this rebuild will be $$$.
Either way, to do a full rebuild (if you're rebuilding an engine its stupid to skimp on anything), its gunna cost like $1500-2000.
And you are still going to have to pull the engine out.
Rebuilding an engine isn't something that should be done by a newb. And if you're paying a machine shop to do it, add another $700-1000 to that $1500-2000....all this just for a single cam?
Just swap a lower KM engine in there and be done with it.

there are a few speciality tools needed as well.. valve spring compressor, ridge reamer, ring compressor (that's just to name a few) not a lot of guys have these tools available at their homes and if you are a novice i definately do not recommend rebuilding your motor.
I'd just pick up another d16 and swap it in (i'll help you out if you want) as long as you got a nice garage to work in.

You can buy a D16 or even ZC for cheaper than what a rebuild will set you back. Just be sure to change out the t-belt, waterpump, etc before you install the new engine.
Also get a new clutch kit while your at it.
