quiet exhaust

hey i have a 5th gen hatch and am interested in working the exhaust on it. i was wondering what diameter pipe and muffler size would allow for perfomance gain but not so much sound (if possible at all) i currently have a CAI and in the midst of purchasing an exhaust mani. i was also thinking of replacing the cat with a test pipe. any input would help, thanx

oh and i have been told that a muffler with at least 3 in of canister insulation around the pipe would give a nice sound that isn't too loud.

test pipe = loud & illegal, most people go with 2.25" or 2.5" piping

and looks great...
pointless to run a testpipe unless you're Turbo'd... gains are minimal and you're just stinking up the air

Apex'i worldsport is nice and quiet. i'm using a header-back full system that's actually 2.5" all the way through (straight pipe).

i am going to be doing header back. i was thinking a 4-1 vs the 4-2-1. will that make much of a diff and does the 3" intake help as well? i know right now that the intake gives a nice sound even with stock exhaust

i'm using a Mugen 4-1 header and i noticed a nice little gain from it over the stock 4-2-1 i had before. as for the intake size, i'm not sure if it'll make a big difference or not unless you have an aftermarket intake manifold, cams, etc. done as well...it may still bottle neck a bit after the 3" piping (throttle body?).

yeah that makes sense. what about imitation headers, like the cheap ones you can get off of ebay. are they poorly made, would i be wasting my time and money or is a header a header?

Just get a dynomax super turbo exhaust, dont let the name fool you. It is really quiet and cheap.

Just buy a Cheap pipe and get the Longest resonator you can in the Diameter Exhuast your going to. If you go 2.25 inch and get a foot long resonator it will be very quiet. I had a similar set-up on a Focus and it was barely louder than stock. I have a 2.5 inch right now on my B16 and its Very Quiet under 5000RPM. Why?. I have a 2.5 Resonator thats 18" long!!!! . I say buy whatever cheap pipe you don't mind the look of and buy a 2.25 inch resonator and get an Exhuast shop to Weld up a 2.25 inch system for you. It should still be cheaper than buying a full cat-back system and give you noticable gain's with minimal sound increase. The reason some people's car's are stupidly loud is they don't have a resonator.

is there even much performance gains from stock diameter to 2.25" or 2.5" if any at all?

i have a resonator as well, but doesin't that sihit decrease your hp gains if any, because you have your headers then your exhaust that have to travel through that your resonator on a smaller pipe then back open to a large pipe and out?

how much is the dynomax superturbo exhaust cost?

i'm using header-back magnaflow... deep and nice (not too loud) outside, and very quiet inside from 0 to 4500 rpm.....

No...Not if your Resonator is the Same internal Diamerter as the rest of your exhuast. You can see right throught the thing. I have a 2.5 cat, 2.5 Resonator into a 2.5 muffler at the back. the muffler is straight through as well. Im suprised myself how quiet it is. Its all in the Resonator.
