Quick question....

how long should you let your car idle when its cold out, or even normally????

i heard different things,

"shouldnt let it idle for too long, no more that 30secs, might damage engine components"

"should let it idle for min 2 mins"

so which one is it????

I saw an article on this in the paper. Their advice was "Don't bother to idle but at the same time don't go full throttle for the first minute of running"

Letting the engine idle is a waste of gas. In the summer generally i'll start it up and drive off in about a minute. i'll take it easy untill the temp reaches normal conditions... In the winter i'll wait till the idle rpm drops to about 1200 before i drive off.. (how long that takes depends how cold it is). i have a digital HUD which projects the rpm's in digital format onto the windshield, pretty accurate and extremely practical ... the stock gauge just doesn't cut it

Idling for too long causes carb buildup in ur engine.

Juss to let u know...carb build up isn't a good thing.

when i was in honda school, i watched a video and it showed how long it took oil to circulate all the way up to the cam, it took about 45 seconds at cold start idle (around 2000rpm) to get up to the cam, however there is always lubraction for the cam, but not as much as when oil is circulating, so it's good to let the car idle for about a min, at least that's what they tought me from my honda factory training.
