Questions about a Swap *Serious Buyer*

***Check my Last Thread for Update ******

I've decided on the B16A2, and I have some questions about the install, and things I should look out for with the engine. To start, I am going to go take a look at an engine sometime this week. The engine is going into a 99 4dR EX (manual tranny)

1. What kind of Compression numbers should I be looking for?
2. What/Where should I be looking to confirm that the engine and tranny are genuine JDM and not Domestic?
3. Is there anything in particular I should be checking such as Sensors, etc?

Some questions about the install
1. I will need new axles correct?
2. Can I still get all my components such as AC and Cruise to work?
3. Is there anything that won't work ater the install?

Sorry for all the questions, but I've searched and searched and can't find answers to all my questions. Since I am spending quite a bit I wanna know as much as I can.

Finally, awhile back I was told that a few people on this board do swaps. Mr.Civic is one of them, who is the other guy? I think people told me he does them in a day or so

bbarbulo 22-Apr-2004 10:04 PM

about 190-200 compression numbers on a strong B16A2 depending on the tester of course.

if it's JDM it's NOT a B16A2, it's just a B16A

make sure none are broken and the wiring harness is not cut

you need 99-00 SiR axles or USDM 99-00 Si axles if you car has no ABS

100%

shouldn't be!

imported_caloge 22-Apr-2004 10:15 PM

so if he has abs then no axle corrections ( i want to know to because im am looking at the same swap on 96 ex sedan)

bbarbulo 22-Apr-2004 10:16 PM

USDM 99-00 Si axles if you car has no ABS

there is a reason why it says USDM there, I'll let you find out why

Where did you get the 200 psi for compression? That is a very srong b16 I have the same engine and very high compression pistons with a cut head and a kit head gasket and that is 195 psi at cranking, remember when the engine is turning 200 rpm, cranking speed, there wont be the psi numbers. Look for around 180 psi. You will know if it is bad because bad engines make way less psi numbers

bbarbulo 22-Apr-2004 10:24 PM

180 is low!!

A LS motor gives you about 175. B16A should do about 190 psi, but like I said, IT DEPENDS ON THE TESTER... It's more important to be even across the board, but he asked for a figure to shoot for, so I gave him one. Also, hope you're keeping the throttle plate open while cranking.

you tell if it's bad cause the cylinders will vary in compression....if they are all the same compression then you have a tight motor...

I think this engine is reported to have 220 all around. My car does have ABS, and I will have to check on whether or not it is a B16A or B16A2 ... Where would I check on the engine for that?

According to one installer I need axles from a 94+ integra

imported_Moe_Mentum 25-Apr-2004 11:26 AM

Alright you guys were right B16A2 Domestic my bad

cee_mon 25-Apr-2004 11:31 AM

And if your looking for a JDM B16A...there are 2 of them..
OBD 0 and OBD 1, but both of them just B16A
There is a way to tell from some of the sensors....maybe someone else can tell you more about it, as i dont wanna give you any wrong advice.

imported_Moe_Mentum 29-May-2004 08:34 AM

Alright so I am still a bit confused as to whether or not I need new axles. bbarbulo said I would need the SIR axles without ABS, but I do have ABS, so are no axles needed? I was told by Mr.Civic I do need axles from a 94+ Integra. Also if it is a B16A which wiring setup is correct for my Car OBD 0 or 1? And is there any way of determining which year car the engine was from?

punkindrublic 29-May-2004 08:44 AM

i think bbarbulo said you need 99-00 usdm Si axles... as they didn't have abs... but that car is the same as our 99-00 SiR only with abs... so if you do have abs you need SiR axles from here... if no abs you need 99-00 Si axles from the states... i think anyways

imported_Moe_Mentum 30-May-2004 12:28 PM

alright the engine is actually a JDM b16A with GSR tranny, and now they've told me I need a wiring harness adapter. Damn that's gonna be costly isn't it? Anyone know where I can get one?

imported_JookSingKid 30-May-2004 01:23 PM

my buddies LSVTEC has 220 but it runs crazy compression

Like 12.5 : 1

195 for stock B16A is good compression for sure.

dingus88 30-May-2004 04:57 PM

ah your motor is a obd1 motor hence why they want an adapter so yoru car is a 99 yet will be running a 92-95 engine which is illegal I might add  adn has a gsr tranny for some reason :shrugs: so your heavy 4 door will have a b16 with a tranny that has longer gears and has a older engine :shrugs: it will be slow as ****......get a obd 2 engine...your shop sounds very sketchy....your car is a 4 door I'd be running a b20 with gsr tranny to pull that weight around or a b18c

imported_Moe_Mentum 30-May-2004 11:35 PM

Alright, I am getting really confused with this swap now. Is there any year B16A JDM engine that is OBD2 or are all of the JDM b16A's OBD1? I am going back there tomorow, and I am going to say no go on the OBD1! So swapping an older engine in your car is illegal for sure right? Also they gave me the impression that the GSR tranny is better then the stock one, I assume this is no longer correct.

If anyone could help that would be really great, I don't want to get ripped off, as it seems I might.

DaRizzla 31-May-2004 02:07 AM

JDM B16A2 = OBD2

DaRizzla 31-May-2004 04:53 AM

someone correct me if im wrong.....

imported_Moe_Mentum 31-May-2004 09:11 AM

I hope it is, if so then all is well. I searched so many places but It just confuses me more. I know anything 92-95 is OBD1 and 96+ should be OBD2, so I guess check the date printed on the engine.

dingus88 31-May-2004 11:59 AM

there are obd 2 b16's the gsr just has abit longers gears and has a longer fifth so your cruise rpm is better, and been tolod it has a stronger dif...but just makes the b16 lack of torque more apparent...they probobly get a auto b16 then used a random b series tranny....but seriously I'd look into getting a b20 and gsr tran...or go looking for another reputable shop like altech
