would a first gen b16 fit a 96 civic

yes b16a1 is a direct swap

no serious mods necesary..

but I wouldnt recomend putting in an older engine than the car

You would have to buy a hydo clutch tranny though

isn't it illegal to put an engine in a car that is older then the car?
