Putting a tire on by yourself.

I was wondering is it possiable to put a tire onto the rim witout any special tools. because my friend has a wheel balancing machine in der garage.

Gunmetalef 15-Jul-2005 01:15 AM

you can try... get it on the rim.. and start filling it up with air see what happens

Nova_Dust 15-Jul-2005 01:36 AM

When I see people put tire on wheel, they need to use a bar to pry the tire edge while rotating the wheel. You could try, but I don't think it will be easy.

how fuggin cheap are you? go get it done right by a pro, dont screw with sh*t like that...your life is riding on your tires. i wouldnt do it especially with a "newfie trick".

imported_twinbros 15-Jul-2005 09:21 AM

Remeber, the low profile tires are a pain in the ass to put on a rim. Good luck.

:dito:

and if your friend has a balancing machine why doesn't he have a mounting machine as well...??

imported_alwaysoverkill 15-Jul-2005 09:33 AM

this was just talked about, just pay a tire shop to do it. they don't charge that much. if you start screwin around with a bar to get the tire on you could damage the rims, yourself or the tire...is it worth it?

for normal stuff there is DIY...for everything else, there's mastercard :D

theres really nothing to worry about...once your tire is on and you have the bead sealed, its ON. They cant just flop off.

but i just dealed with this situation last week. Take it to Wal-Mart. It cost me $23 bucks even, and since your friend has a balancing machine..$23 is all its gonna cost you.

Scott-93HBSi 15-Jul-2005 11:11 AM

if it's a low profile tire GOOD LUCK! Haha. If it's a 70 or 80 seiers tire you should have no problem! :)

Nova_Dust 15-Jul-2005 11:15 AM

Usually, tire mounting and balancing, 40 bucks, for 4.

wow i get quoted with no additional comment...i must be good.

punkindrublic 16-Jul-2005 09:15 AM

i think installing a tire in your garage to save $10 per tire has to be one of the worst ideas ever

imported_BoOsTd 16-Jul-2005 09:20 AM

you asked:

somehow get the tire on the rim with lots of prybars (damage to the rim is normal) lowprofile tires are hard to get on with a machine let alone by hand.
then once you get the tire on, splash some gasoline around the bead, then light it with a match, the small explosion causes the bead to set, then you can use your bicycle pump to finish the job (assuming your also to cheap to buy a mini compressor).

Anyway thats how the army does it up north:shrugs:

on tv i was watching sum offroading and it was insane.. cuz a truck got a flat and had a spare tire .. no rim.. and he took the rim off the car .... took the flat off.. put the new tire around it.. put a bunch of lighter fluid on the rim and threw a match in there.. allt he fluid blew up but it blew up so fast it filled the tire up ..lol..

dont try that at home though

Ok i never said I wanted to do this to save money. I saw this done many times in magazines and wanted to try it. because it looked like a DIY. dont assume if you dont know.
