Purpose of the Airbox

so i was wondering if anyone could tell me the real purpose of an airbox, and why i should leave it in at all. seems like the car couldnt possible run better with it in, considering 1/4 of my engine bay is now free for air to flow through with it out. im waitin on a cold air intake, and i just dont see a reason to leave the airbox in while i wait for the intake. am i missing something significant?

The airbox acts as a silencer for your intake. Removing your airbox and having the paper filter exposed is basically a short arm and when your heavy on the throttle you can hear it.

As far as a benefit yeah you'd notice a difference but wouldn't say its really worth the effort especially since you'll have an exposed paper filter. The way I see it is its winter and why do something twice wait until you get your new intake and then install.
