well the disadvantage of b16s are their lack or torque, which means you'll have to rev it to 6000rpms before you have any real power, and their need for premium gas (like any dohc vtec engine).
They are high revving engines with a nice, short geared tranny that'll get you up in the rpms pretty quick. A little headwork, some more compression and different cams/valvetrain and b16s can make some nice WHP and rev to like 9000rpms if you really so desire, this is b/c of their rod/stroke ratio (its a very nice ratio).
B16s take boost pretty good as well.
I like b16s, most people hate on them b/c of how little torque they make, but IMO they're a good starter engine if you wanna get into a b-series engine. They're cheap and plentiful, and if you get sick of the lack of torque and low end power, get a b20 bottom end and make a b20vtec....or boost the sucka.

or would this be simply a bolt on? (im honda newb man..been sucking up nissan crap for the past two years)

golden eagle makes a kit so that you can do this in your garage (no trips to the machine shop), which i highly recommend to everyone that wants to build a lsvtec or b20vtec.
The head bolts right onto the bottom end, but there are a few things that you would need to take car of, like the external vtec oil feed line and plugging the original feed hole in the head, etc etc (these are all taken care of in the golden eagle kit, this is why i always recommend using this kit, it worth every penny).
And of course tuning, honda doesn't have a factory b20vtec program to use, so a custom tune is your best bet, but if money is tight, you could just use a b20vtec program that was made for someone else (i have a few) as a basemap to start with and get you by for a while.
B20vtecs are a personal favorite of mine.

how much would this kit run me?

and also..the programs you recommend for tuning..easy to use for someone less than mechanically inclined? or should i leave that job to someone more knowledged?

you know what dude.. let me know if you ever got a moment to meet up for some java.. i prefer to discuss car stuff in person. for some reason it sticks in my head vs. me constantly referring back to an online source.. so if you have time to give me the honda do's and dont's, can do's and should do's.. let me know..i can drive out to the hammer

Someone has a crush on zeeman ;-)..

b16 = lack of tourqe like andrew said.
tranny is nice though although you will be at 4000rpms @ 120 on the highway in 5th gear. Not much more i can say Andrew summed it up pretty well.

the golden eagle kit can be had for about $200 US on ebay. I would also highly recommend some head studs (ARP or golden eagle) and to resurface the head you would use.

As far as maintenance goes, a lot of people have trouble with failing Ignitors, leaky cam plugs.

yayaya!!!...
i love b16's the best b series starter engine ever. you can beat the life outta them and they love it. a b16 should keep any d series owner happy for years. then you can go play with the big boys and the big dollars. i would recommend the b16 for sure. beat it like its not yours and have fun. and the lack of torque...dude compared to the d series it will be a non issue...i always had a blast with mine...its a cheap swap and fun...can you beat that?

thats what i was worried about that id despise about owning a honda..im used to torque steer

so i figured getting honda with an already swapped motor might alleviate that issue.

I would go over the swapped car with a fine tooth comb before I even made an offer. IMO already swapped cars get beat on more.
