problem : auto tranny clunking when breaking @25km/h?
 

Got this weird clunking problem on my 94 HB DX.
When I'm breaking; at about 25kms/hr, the car downshifts (automatic), and there is this jerk/clunk. Almost seems like it downshifted too early or something. All the other gears shifts down fine, and shifting up is firm in all gears.

Changed the tranny fluid, and that didn't seem to help.

Any Ideas? a friend suggested that I try some tranny treatement fluid or something.

This can't be good for the tranny :)

how many km's? if theres alot might aswell swap for a new one, a tranny rebuild is a hell of a alot more than a used one

I bought the car used and there is 140k on the odometer, don't know what it could be in real life. :)

it's hard to say man, auto trannies are pretty complex devices. 1st of all, I'm assuming you didn't get a CEL, so the ECU is unaware that anything odd is going on. Usually what happens is the fluid is neglected for a long time and it builds up sludge and gets deposited into valves and passages, so the pressure readings get thrown off and the tranny gets confused. The cheapest thing to try at this point is ProLong tranny additive... I know ppl knock it as a magical potion, but the fact is when ppl in my Saturn club had this problem with "reverse clunk" 95% of the cases were solved using ProLong... the isht is like a strong detergent that should wash out the sludge. Failing that, you are prolly looking into replacing some solenoids or valves, which could get pricy.

It might just be normal. Does this happen when you are braking going downhill? If so, its normal from my experiences with Honda auto tranny's. In the three auto Hondas/Acuras I have owned, I find the downshift when going downhill seems somewhat harsher (or more pronounced) than usual, although I haven't ever heard any noises (clunking, etc). If it happens all the time though or causes a noise, then there may be a problem.

To carlify (correction), its not really a "clunk" its more of a hard downshift, like somoene doing a bad downshift on a manual tranny.

No CEL, and I changed the tranny fluid a week back to see if that made a difference.

I found that it doesn't happen all the time, for instance, if i'm breaking hard from say 80km to a stop, it will shift down fine. And from the looks of it, when I just start driving it. Could just be that I haven't gotten up to full speed.

I used to have an auto accord; which downshifted hard; so i wonder if its something honda-ish.

Never really took the slant of the car into consideration; I'll have to make note of that.
