Probably Stupid Turbo Question... sorry.

hey im sorry to ask this because it seems i ask alot of questions which have already been answered but, how reliable are turbos, im talking from the local speed shop probably rudy helds in newhamburg or someone credible to install it as well as supply it.

how will they do over time? will they last the entire life of the car? or up to 4 years? or 2? etc.

how about winter, any reccomendations? i have a d17a1 and i started in another thread about getting the juice out of this p.o.s. seems like a turbo is the only way to go. any help is great, like i said i want to keep the car reliable and not wear it out more over time.

p.s i would be running about 6-8lbs of boost.

A car with turbo can be reliable with proper parts, installation and maintenance.

i suggest you speak with Dave from Defcon Racing.
He is very experienced with all kinds of turbo setups and can answer any of your questions.

If you go to a shop for purchase and install your gonna pay big time. but the should back there work, if there a decent shop.

Nothing will last for ever, when your plannig on pushing 100-200% more than something was engineered you have to expect that relabilty will go down. that being said like said above quality parts will help alot as well a good tune, and keep up with your regulat maintenance and you should be fine. but to say a na car gone fi will last the life of the car i would say not likely. but to your luck d17 will be dirt cheap when your motor likely goes.

Do you even understand what boost is?
to make it easy its a restriction value, or the INability for the motor to move the air from intake to exhaust. your raming air into the motor and it cant move it out fast enough. If you can move more air and run a lower psi your laughing. That is why 2 setups can make completly diff #'s per/lb or any random boost level.
stock head/cams/cam timing vs a built head will gain double digits in hp/tq no problem and run a lower psi level and be easier on the entire setup.

SO NO MORE BOOST GOALS!!! plain and simple its stupid

set hp/tq goals and people will be able to help

ill be putting that in ever post i see people post boost goals so nothing personal

I wonder what Dave recommends for fuel management for an 01+...

brianmcgaugh 09-Aug-2007 05:56 PM

kpro or aem id say but i havent paid to much attention to the 01+ civic/tegs

DefconDave 11-Aug-2007 01:16 PM

For a stand alone, I would probably go with AEM or F-Con Vpro or possibiliy Greddy E-manage (<-- piggy back). If you want something cheaper I believe there is an AFC Hack system out there.

But honestly, it doesn't sound like your ready for any of this stuff. This type of modification is very involved, and expensive.

Good luck

imported_chris_v2 11-Aug-2007 01:52 PM

dave.. do you guys have an inhouse tuner?

imported_187Chor 13-Aug-2007 10:36 PM

turbo forum is closed so im gonna ask here.......
can ur car make boost in partial throttle or will i only get boost at WOT?

brianmcgaugh 13-Aug-2007 10:38 PM

There is/was turbo forum?
wouldnt that be an idea!

brianmcgaugh 13-Aug-2007 10:44 PM

Turbo requires some load to create boost
smaller turbo will create boost easier less load

honestly forget about trying to make a D17a1 quicker. Just make your car look nice and cruise.

your car is a 03 sedan and it will never be a race car or look like one. If you wanna get into the tuner sport you should start with a completly different car (something old) late 80s-mid 90s.

you can get into the tuner sport with the 7th gen civic but it just costs alot more than an EG or even an EK.

You can make your car fast...it just costs alot of money. Too much money.

Being totally novice to Turbo's I had the good fortune of getting my 98 Si already boosted, anyhow, there is alot of things that can and will go wrong if its not set up right. Tuning plays a major factor as well as good quality parts. Having good knowledge also goes a long way. Fortunately for me my car has been running OK. It still needs alot of work before its running perfect, but i'm learning as I go. If i had to purchase a new turbo kit and have it installed, I would have defenately turned away from it and gone another route. Goodluck.

03SilverCiv 21-Aug-2007 05:09 PM

what type of gains can i expect from this hondata kseries ecu swap? or will it just make life easier for tuning in the future?

zeeman 21-Aug-2007 06:43 PM

wow.....$1175 US for k-pro if you have the right ecu, add $600 for the right ecu if you don't have one....jeeeeeeeeebus.
Does anyone buy this stuff?!?!?!?!

brianmcgaugh 21-Aug-2007 06:45 PM

OBD-1 honda EMS is just super cheap, the rest of the tuning world isnt as thrifty. and its funny people complain at the price of crome pro and neptune
