Power steering to Non power steering conversion
So over the weekend, with the help of Scott Newman (once again, great work), my car has converted from PS to Non-PS.
The car felt as if I had PS again, which explains that driving a PS car without the belt is that much harder. Car needs alignment but that's understood. The racks look different, for sure; and the steering linkages are different. |
Where did you get teh racks Charles? My belt is off and I am thinking of doing the same as you.
|
be prepared to pay alot of money.
the job is labour intensive |
Well screw that shyte!
|
is it lighter without the ps?
|
I bought the rack off of a guy on TCC, he parted out his EK hatch.
As for labour, contact Scott Newman, I am sure what I paid for was more than fair enough and anyone would agree with me on that price. |

nice mod charles.

Originally posted by Nova_Dust If by lighter you mean the weight, yes it is, even the rack itself is lighter. But steering feel, it is lighter than driving with out the belt. So PS>Non PS>PS w/o belt |
Originally posted by Capo I am sure you have read about this but many people have connected the 2 outlets on the PS rack to a T fitting and then to a small reservoir and bled off as much PS fluid in the rack as possible and many said it felt alot easier to turn there PS rack (w/o belt on) than if you just remove the belt and leave the stock lines there. Labour cost will be roughly the same, and so are parts. It was a toss up for me, but I choose the swap. Less hose/lines to worry about in the engine bay. |

what are the plus' to having NO power steering???
i was gonna switch back to PS cuz my cx didnt come with it....but if there are gains to having no PS then i'm interested :) |
I think mainly the reason people take it out is that it makes the car lighter
|
you get a few ponies because you're not driving the pump anymore, but driving a PS rack without the pump is annoying, esp, city driving where you need to make on-the-spot turns and what not.
Rack & pinon is perfect, doesn't rob power, it's lighter apparently, and it's managible. |
