Port and polish??
Owning a stock '88 civic, would porting and polishing the heads and intake add any extra power or would it just be a waste of time?

Like elistian mentoned it is a waste of money, your better off saving your money for a swap.
Well I know a shop where I can get it down and I know someone that will do it pretty much for free if I bring my car in. But what might I gain from it?? One or two horse maybe? If that?
not exactly sure man I havent dont much research into port and polishing... i wouldnt imagine you would gain much at all though... im pretty sure you wouldnt notice any difference..
Alright, thanks alot!
In my opinion it could be good and could be bad, like elistian said if your doing it yourself its a wasted of time because you may not no what your doing and you could loose hp but if you get it professionally done im sure you would gain alot
If you aren't paying much for it then its prolly gunna be a crappy job. Porting and polishing a head takes time and knowledge. Like civicdx said it could be more of a bad thing than a good thing if done wrong. And if done right its gunna be expensive. I would look into doing a mini-me swap if you wanted to pick up some relatively cheap power. You can get a d16z6 or any other SOHC VTEC head for damn cheap.
Port n polish alone prolly wouldn't be worth it. But in combination with 3 angle valve job, mill, some aggressive cams, stiff valve springs and adjustable cam gear would yeild good numbers. But what i mentioned alone would cost as much as parts for a b16 swap. But if a b-series swap isn't in ur budget then i would just get a SOHC VTEC head get it milled and get a decent cam and have yourself a potent little d-series. |
It's not so much that it's not in the budget and the guy I can get to do it has been doing it for years on everything from two stroke GP bikes upto cars.. I'm just wondering if their will even be a horse power gain out of it..

Ive done it on that car, and didnt give anything in return porting shines at higher rpm and the car doesnt rev that high
it would be good if you could give us some more info about your engine like what kind it is and what mods have been done to it...

So I guess I must have had "fake" porting jobs done on every engine I have ever had (except the Diesel I have now!!) Because if my R1 had a real porting job I would get 20hp gain at 4000rpm. Where do they do Real ones??
'88 Honda Civic SE 1.5.. As my name says Bone stock except for a muffler, but it'sthe stock headers and pipeing so no hp gain from that..
If its free then why just not do it?

well i am sure he will have to buy a headgasket, head studs and coolant.

grab a sohc vtec d16z6
or grab a dohc ZC 1.6 (non-vtec) but u can always go turbo later on.... |
