popping sound from exhaust
Sometimes when I shift, I hear a popping sound coming from the exhaust. This also happens sometimes right after I downshift to slow down while my tach is at higher RPM's.
What exactly is that and why would it do that.

You're air/fuel mix is running too rich... unburnt fuel is making it's way through the exhaust, when you shift or downshift the change in airflow causes the heat to ignite the fuel in the exhaust system, and "BAM!" you get a loud pop sound... I have the same problem... running stock ECU with stock fuel and ignition maps on a fully rebuilt motor... althoguh mines isn't neary as bad as T.o.teg's old GSR.
Were you the one who's running the Mugen chipped B16A ecu? That would explain the rich a/f mix. the mugen program runs way too rich for even most built motors. Fuel control and spark control will help smoothen things out.

Anyways, well, this popping thing was happening even before my swap. Well, just as long it's not harmful to my car in anyway.

You dudes run your B16A's pretty hard dontcha? The hotter the engine, the more fuel is gonna get dumped by the ECU especially at WOT... this is to prevent any lean condition in the fuel mix.... ever hear ping sounds coming from the exhaust after you shut the motor off at the ned of a few hard runs? That's small amounts of fuel "exploding" in your exhaust system. It's normal for a honda motor... but an overly rich mix is gonna hinder performance, gas kilomterage, and you'll get that nasty black residue buildup on your exhaust tip and bumper. Like i said fuel control devices and even an AFPR can help smoothen things out... finding out where exactly it is running rich would be the difficult part.

so it's true that honda's come from the factory running on the rich side? i got the black stuff on my exhaust tip but i guess i shouldnt have to worry cuz i havent done anything internal to my motor. only bolt-ons and that shouldnt be affecting anything. oh well, popping is kinda cool anyway
