PCV valve

I tested mine today, and it didn't make a clicking sound like the Haynes manual said it should when i squeeze shut the rubber tube when the engine is idleing.

Are these expesnive to replace? Or can they be bought from like the local CT?

Not sure, but I think they're pretty cheap. No more than $10

You should take it off completly to do the test......the hose might not be compressed enough to make it ckick. Take it off and test it by blowing into it.

I think it was around $5-$6 when I replaced mine on my old 92 Civic. If you haven't replaced it in a while, you might as well do it as it doesn't cost much anyway.

everyone is right about the price...less then 10$.

just take off the PCV valve and shake it....rattle sound=OK, no rattle sound=clogged and needs replacement.

In the haynes manual it doens't say much for removing the valve. The directions are only to remove it and replace it with a new one, but it doens't say how to go about it.

Does it just screw off?

Yup, just disconnect the hose and pull it out.

Where is the PCV valve on the 1.6l SOHC VTEC engines? I need to check mine. Idle is a bit funny.

You don't wanna know... but I'm gonna tell ya anyway...

The positive crankcase ventillation valve on your 1996 Civic is located halfway down the back side of the motor. It is seated sideways in the intake manifold. You WILL need a flashlight to see it. You'll also need two or three pairs of long needle nose pliers to remove the clamps on the PCV hose at the valve. It'll also be much easier if someone helps you. One of you should be under the hood and the other underneath the vehicle/engine. To give you an extra clue, if you know where the oil filter is located... if you're underneath the vehicle, facing the front of the car, the PCV valve is located just above and I believe, to the right of the oil filter.

Once you get the valve out, you might wanna just replace it... after all, it's only between five and ten dollars. Have fun!

For everyone else: it's a good idea to replace PCV valves approxiamately every 20,000 kms. It'll enhance performance, reduce emmissions and optimize your fuel economy. Don't believe that old backyard mechanics tale of shake, rattle and roll... or blowing through them.

sorry! not sure where I got 1996 Civic from, but I'm quite sure that the PCV valve is in the same location on 1996 to 2000 sohc Civic engines. Have a look for yourself.

When I had my SOHC motor, I knew where it was. After reading this post I decided to check my valve for my DOHC motor since I haven't changed it ever since I swapped it in, which was about 60,000 kms ago. The problem is, I can't find it. It's a 1st gen b16.

Honda pcv valves are almost always -if not- always located at the intake manifold. Most of the time they're seated in a rubber grommet, but many thread into the manifold. Try to see if you can find the pcv hose, then follow it from the valve cover to the intake. Unfortunately, where I work we don't get many DOHC motors in, so I can't remember exactly where the valve's located. However, the mojority of honda pcv valves are located around the centre of the intake manifold.

I've removed that hose a long time ago and replaced it with one of those breathers.

I think that you might be referring to the crankcase vent tube... it also connects to the valve cover.

yes, that is the crankcase vent tube

I don't recall any other tubes coming from the valve cover though

What's the purpose of a PCV valve? Controls idle?
