painting the heat shield
k, so I wanna paint my heat shield (likely just flat black), but the bolts are rusted to ****, and im sure they will break upon contact.
has anyone ever attempted to remove said rusted bolts, or tried painting without removing it? (ie. covering everything else really nicely?) thnx |
ya, I took mine off... spray WD40 on them, warm up the manifold a LITTLE by running the engine, spray lots of wd40 on it again, and then attempt to remove them.
|
my bolts were rusted you jsut gotta work them... but not to much that they break cause then you have a big waste of time on your hands
|
thanks guys
anyone else try this before??? |
blip blip, ohh sorry I forgot you guys are using hand tools, im too used to air :P
But yeh I took mine off, they came off very easy |
haha... i guess I gotta make my way over to your place then.
Ill bring you some nice CD's. |

" friends dont let friends paint heat sheilds"... j/k... Lots of liquid wrench (:listen: shhh.. wd40 sux...lol) and maybe a propane blow torch will free them bolts loose.. vise grips if your strip the head.... |

I had a painted heat shield for 2 years before i decided to put headders on.. Its a nice touch cuz its the first thing you see when you pop the hood!! They get rusty and dirty looking really quick... The only problem I found was that I had to repaint it often, cuz it kept fadeing from the rain comeing through the bumper and all the heat..ect maybe it was the paint I was useing (leftover brake caliper paint..I figured it would take the heat and weather the best..)
|
I always repaint mine in high heat silver cuz bugs and whatnot splatter on it and get caked on... little sanding, little spray paint, the thing looks good for another year. I put stainless steel bolts on there too, cuz those stock ones are ass...
|
I just took mine off, now you can see my crusty header, I dont care.
|
yah forsure.. Toxic, I definitely recomend what bbarbulo said about the stainless bolts... what I did was remove one, went to the hardware store and grabbed a few of them so I was all ready to finish the job... New hardware always looks nice too:thumbup: as well as function...

I hope you tied the O2 sensor wire out of the way Matt... so it doesn't get crispy. I'd recommend putting it back on.
