overheating problem help

Ok here is what i diagnosed so far any help would be appreciated,

coolant = full, fan doesn't seem to come on all the time, checked the motor on the fan= works, checked the fuse = ok, so the problem with the fan not coming on has to be from somewhere else, when i used the multimeter in the relay plugs for the fan it was reading 0.01, correct me if i am wrong but this should change as engine temp goes up, does not change so i think that it is the switch, any help please let me know what else it could be

try jumping the thermoswitch. The fan should come right on when u start the car with the thermoswitch jumped.

^^^ Yeah doing that will insure the relay is good. If that doesn't work then replace the thermoswitch

have you done any work to the engine lately. Maybe an air lock? Cooling fan relays are cheap to buy. Change anyways? After a few years under the hood, the heat can get to them. Also, make sure thermostat is working right. If it is sticking closed, the engine will overheat. Check the basics before you replace any sensors.

shouldn't be an air lock, i filled coolant then bleed and then filled then bleed again, not sure if this is how you bleed the coolant or not but this is what i did, you do that by releasing the little bleed valve near the engine at the top hose, untill no more bubbles come out, thanks guys will try to jump the thermo switch tommorow and i don't think that it is a problem with the thermostat because the top hose gets hot which means it's letting coolant through , thanks for your help so far will keep you posted on jumping the thermoswitch( any idea about cost for the relay) i know the switch costs like 20 bux

it's easiest to diagnose overheating problems if you tell us when it heats up and when it cools down. if it heats up in traffic, but cools down when you're on the highway, then your fan isn't running correctly. instead of replacing random parts, why don't you start checking with a multimeter where there is and isn't voltage. that way there is no guessing.

pretty much what you said heating up in traffic and cooling down on the highway, but after extended periods of time it heats up even on the highway, anyways, here goes again for bbarbulo

12 volts to fan runs it = fan motor works
jumping the relays port works it = wiring from fan to relay is fine
now i don't seem to be getting any reading in the voltmeter when i plug into the other two pins in the relay i presume this is where my switch power is coming from, no power there ever even when the engine is hot (which should be sending power there hence connecting the relay and sending power to the fan) will check the swithch now and let you guys know,

I think i might be losing the water pump which is why the car is running hot to begin with

now did the jump at the wires that lead to the switch fan turns on so does this mean that the switch is the culprit, if so is there anyway to make sure

If you jump the therm switch, you should have power at the other sides of the relay. Bbarulo is right. Don't guess, it costs too much.If your water pump is leaking, replace. Other wise leave it. You can't "lose" water pump. Either it works or it doesn't. Get some wiring diagrams, and try to verify everything is working right.
