Overheating? How bad is it?
 

Overheated my car today, didn't notice it untill the neddle was at "H" in the red zone, so I pulled over and my engine light came on. Let it cool down then put some antifreeze in cause I found a leak and it all came out.

I made it home fine with the temp staying at normal but gotta change the rad asap.

Can you do alot of damage when it overheats?

How many times have you let your car overheat??

this is what happens when you let your car overheat..
the block will expand, the head will expand
the head can crack/warp
and inhence destroy the headgasket

only overheated once first time today like this.

monitor your coolant level over the next couple weeks. look for coolant loss and signs of oil in the coolant.

over heating is not that bad for honda engines while I don't recommend letting your engine over heat ..... the only problem I had with that happened was my temperature sensor went bad....(too much heat maybe??)

anyways just don't drive it till a new rad is in

duy: do i just check the overflow jug for coolant level in my rad? Would oil be visible in that container as well?

when checking the level look right into the rad itself

should it be right at the top?

In the rad, it should be at the top.

In the overfow tank....between the hot and cold lines.


Also check your oil dip stick......if you see a creamy colourd film on it, that means the rad fluid is entering into the oil system. ie....head gasket. (but somtimes there's hardly anything there to show you this.

the best way would be to remove your rad cap when the engine is COLD.

then top up the rad, and make sure the overflow is ok (between the lines)

Start the engine, and let it run. The thermostat should open up at 180-190 degrees. The rad might overflow a bit, don't worry. Once the fan turns on (around 180-190), quickly fill the rad to the top (top it off) then put the rad cap back on. Doing it this way will allow all the air to escape from the system.

I usually keep the rev's at around 1000 so that the air can work its way out of the system faster, before I top up the rad and cap it. (that's what I've seen Honda tech guys do)


Then let it cool down for a few hours until the engine is cool to the touch. By now, the rad will have sucked in from the overflow any rad fluid that it might of needed. Fill the overflow to the cold line or a bit higher, and then keep an eye on your temp gauge, and the oveflow bottle. If neither of them moves...you're ok. If either of them moves, theres a problem.

If you are losing rad fluid.....cracked head or gasket.

Gauge rises alot....faulty sensor or warped head.

(those obsevations came from the Honda guys)

ANY overheating is bad for a Honda engine.......well, any engine really.

thats why they have cooling systems....


if my honda engine is allowed to overheat why am i lugging around all my cooling system...
