over heated?

i need some help i went to visit some friends about a hour away by highway. So im driving home everything is fine and i notice my heat shoot up i have the heater on in the car on full blast i was travvling at about 115 km/h and its liek - 15 with the windchill so i was kind of shocked. It keep going up and up so i was just about ready to pull over and its like the nedle went limp and jsut dropped back to regualr operating tempature and was fine the rest of the way home no smoke nothing the fan was working as well when i got home. Did my thermostat just stick closed or open?? i am a little nervous now as i make that commute 2 - 3 times a week and dont want to get stranded on the side of the road in this weather. its a 90 cx with d15b2 motor any help is greatly appricated.

thanks in advacne

oem honda thermostats have a failsafe on them that closes it shut when it fails or is failing and yeah, it must of been getting hot when its this cold outside... if it is the thermostat it would make sense, but it could maybe be something else.

I'm pretty sure the fail safe on thermostats open up all the way to prevent the car from overheating and potentially staying cold all the time.

If the guage is doing funky stuff, I would say something around the coolant temp sensor or the guage itself.

really? thats odd.. why would a fail safe be shutting the tstat? it would just over heat the engine... youd think a fail safe would be to keep it stuck open?

i wnet for a drive tonite on the highway to see if it woudl do it agian. I drove for about 35-40 mins pure highway and nothing it was normal. Pure fluke i guess it was fine all day for me just sat at normal operationg temapture. No smoke at 5 k rpm out the back so i dont think its head gasket. I think i may have gotten lucky on this one. Thanks for everyones input.

i have a very hard time believing this. Overheating can cause major engine damage, i can't see one good reason for any manufacter to use this...

normal stats when they fail they fail in the closed position...thats why u pay premium for a failsafe stat that fails open to save your engine and they come with some kind of insurance that if it does fail and closes its covered

but why the hell would someone make a tstat that has a fail safe to stay closed... its not really a fail safe if it its closed.. thats just retarded. i dont think the honda guy knows what hes talking about.. and if he does then honda make a horrible stupid mistake.
