Opinion of oil change at Costco?

today, i desided to get an oil change at costco, part of me worried that they would mess it up somehow, or not drain it properly, or forget the plug of something stupid, but the other part said hey..its cheap, and it cant hurt trying it once.

so i did.

they give a detailed invoice, and use "Champ" filters..no clue what those are, if you know tell me... unless he was saying fram with an accent but i doubt it..lol

i got castrol gtx + filter for 18.99, and i could of got syntec for 39.99, cept they dont do flushes.

i got 5W30, is that the right oil to be using in the summer, i have a d16a6 with around 50-70k?

the invoice also says that my car took only 3.1 liters of oil...does that sound right? seems a little on the low side but maybe i dont know anything...im just paranoid. is that what they should take on avg?

it took them 30 min, so im guessing it wasnt a rushed job, so at least thats good.

do it yourself, one of the few minor things you can do and learn about your car too :)

but still 18.99 isn't to bad at all

$27 for synth oil + $10 OEM filter = one good oil change.

what $10 for oil filter lol

I pay $5 for the frams at wal mart, now since honda started using the reg style frams why watse your money?

I get OEM Honda filters regardless... I can't stand the thought of a non-Honda maintenance part in my engine bay. Ugh... I know that's going a bit too far, but when it comes to parts... I trust only one source. I think Altech can get you JDM filters which are supposedly the real deal OEM and better than crap we get here.

Just look for the different O-ring between Honda OEM and Fram filters and you'll see why I use OEM.

3.1 liters?? With filter, a civic is supposed to take 3.5 L....check your dipstick...if its wthin the range, then all they didi is put a smaller filter on....not necessarily the best thing though.....

$13.00 for a liter Red Line Oil. $6.00 for a OEM Honda Oil Filter.

Now that's a good deal. I even have them use my OEM Honda washers.

civic fan: they used oil filter number 2808, is that the right one for my car?

imported_civic_fan 18-Sep-2003 04:04 PM

to be perfectly honest, I dont know....The part numbers will vary cause the brand Costco put on is probably manufactured for them...the smaller filter wont do any harm for now....youll just have to change your oil a little early the next time

Middlemiss 18-Sep-2003 10:12 PM

Change the oil yourself - its really easy.. and you know its done right...

The last time i went to Costco for an oil change, there was a newbie doing it and he spilt oil all over my engine bay...we took it back and they re-did the change meaning they flushed it out twice...haha

how well does motormaster synthetics compare to the national brands ?

PULOVR 20-Sep-2003 03:29 AM

As long as it passes the SAE certification for your car, then it's all good.

Some people will say use syn, but as long as you ALWAYS change your oil at regular intervals, then I don't see the need to use a more expensive oil. If you are that worried, change it every 3000km's instead of every 5000km's.

punkindrublic 20-Sep-2003 10:19 PM

in an attempt to give my engine a longer life i've been changing oil every 4000 kms with synthetic.... 288 000 kms and still kicken

imported_Duge 21-Sep-2003 06:24 PM

i get all my oil and all my filters free...just put my car on the hoist at work and do it all..

PULOVR 21-Sep-2003 10:24 PM
