oil problem

Ok...after every oil change, I'm noticing that as time goes by my oil disappears instead of just getting dirty. The level totally goes down after like 1000km. There are never any puddles of oil under my car to suggest a leak. The oil pan only has moisture on it, no 'real' leaks. It's like the oil just evaporates. Could my engine be burning oil somehow without smoke coming out of my exhaust?

Thats cool, I thought I was the only one lol.. My car does not leak, it doesnt smell, it sure as hell doesnt puff any smoke, and I currently have no cat converter installed, but the oil level is significantly lower at change than when I fill it... Its been bugging me allitll bit but not really cuz my engine is still very strong and it runs like a top! 185,000km , my pluggs are always a nice tan colour, my tailpipe only has traces of carbon inside it, and my fuel milage is great... Anyone else can figure out this mysterious oil disappearence id be very happy

bbarbulo any thoughts?

Oil will evaporate .. some oils evaporate more than others. the higher the heat, the more it evaporates. Oil not only acts as a lubricant but also as an engine coolant .which is why i don't cheap out when it comes to engine oil.

Also as the oil loses it's viscosity it will lose volume as well.. so the oil level will naturally go down a little .. if the oil is almost like water when you check it then you've left it in too long.

Other possibilities could be a slow burning of the oil. maybe a ring is just a little shot, or you have a bad valve seal which would cause a very gradual burn..

i wouldn't worry about it, until you notice plumes of blue-ish white smoke when you accelerate or you're losing 2L every 500 km's .. just top it up regularly. and oh yeah, switch to a better oil.

You are both burning a slight amount of oil... your engines were most likely not broken in right. Oil does disappear too... check the condition of your PCV valve... maybe even install an oil catch can in there. See what you come up with

My Saturn burns oil, cuz they just do that normally ... like under a liter ever 3000 kms. My Civic never uses a drop of oil, but it has been on a synthetic diet after the 15,000 kms oil change.

I thought it was a good idea to go to 10w30 for the summer. Next oil change, I'll go back to 5w30 and see if it still happens.
