Oil check light

So I was cruising around the beaches yesterday when I noticed I needed gas so I pulled in filled up and figured I'd check the oil level. To my suprise the dipstick was bone dry! Now isn't the oil light supposed to come on under these circumstances? Anyhow I bought some generic esso brand to hold me over til I change the oil again and upon getting home I thought I'd inspect the oil pan further and noticed a coat of fresh oil around the bottom of the pan. Gasket maybe????Also would an oil pressure gauge let me know when oil level is a issue? Thanks.

oil pressure gauge > dummy light that never works on 4th gens

this is why I bought an oil pressure gauge for my car...cuz a few times it been lower than I ever would liked it to be and I wouldnt know other than I check my oil whenever I'm bored (which is quite often)

The guage is triggered by low oil pressure, not low oil level. That is the reason why the light is on when the ignition is on and the engine is not running. The light will start to flicker when the oil gets so low that the pick up in the engine is not sucking up oil from the pan. And why doesnt the dummy light work on all fourth gens??? Mine always worked. check the level more frequently.

If it's not one thing it's the next. Last month the cluch went, this month it's a leaky oil pan. Murphy's law strikes again!!!lol
