oil burns way too fast

my engine oil burns way too fast. at about 2.5 thousand km's after an oil change, my oil level is down to minimum.

How can i fix this problem. Also I have recently switched over to synthetic ams oil and im still having this problem. should I simply top it up again and change my oil at 10,000kms.

your input is appreciated.

well first off, check for potential leaks.. oilpan gasket might be done...or main seal... altho allot of people will tell you not to use oil additives, I would give it a try since your loosing so much oil...you could try some of those oil additives than claim to stop oil burning/smoke... That brings up another question..is there lots of black smoke coming out the tailpipe?

You could also check your PVC valve, a new one might help, but wouldnt make it burn that much oil...

well i have had a similar problem with my 5th Gen EJ.

first off, i'm not sure if this is true or not but i did it anyway. i was using synthetic oil for a while too, and i found that it burned faster than non synthetic....so i switched to using non synthetic oils.

second, assuming there are no leaks (if there was a leak, the bottom of your engine bay and drive way, should show signs of a leak) get a compression test etc to see how well your cyclinders are working. most likely, your seals and/or rings are going.

i even went to so far as switching to a 20W50 oil...but I wouldn't recommend this....its way too thick for honda engines.

you have a few options:

1. try those engine additives like restore....but it will take more than using it once obvisouly...you'll have to use multiple treaments.

2. get the engine rebuilt.....roughly will cost $1500 +/-

3. swap it out

4. in the mean time before you decide, you can use Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer ($13 per bottle) to help with my oil consumption....it helps.

You can be losing oil with sticking rings... de-carbonize the combustion chamber using Sea Foam or GM top engine cleaner. Don't use Restore and such products... nothing good has ever come out of pouring solid particles into your oil, and it won't do anything for your seals. Lucas Engine Oil stabilizer is good stuff, and really does help with oil consumption, BUT BEWARE that it allows for air bubbles to form in your oil, meaning at times there will be air travelling through the oil galleys and they will be times when your engine is not being lubricated. Bob is the oil guy! You can try 5W40 for oil as well, but be ready to shell out over $30 for oil alone.

I am not sure what your mileage is but that sort of consumption on a '94 Civic is not abnormal....seals break down, rings get loose... It happens. As, bbarbulo says: live with it. If your car has been running on organic oil (i.e. non-synthetic) for most of it's life, I would stick to the cheaper organic stuff.

Just my $0.02.

Black smoke is not a sign of burning oil.....

lots of black smoke indicates a poor ignition, too much fuel, or not enough air.

blue smoke is a death signal from a motor... it's consuming oil

Note that NOT ALL engines that use oil puff blue smoke. My Saturn (as they ALL do) uses a fair amount of oil, but no blue smoke. To me, this is perfectly acceptable and indicated a good motor (but only cuz a Saturn is supposed to do that).

Yes, I stand corrected my apologies .... Black is fuel problems, bad oxygen sensor, a bad map sensor, a bad fuel pressure regulator, a plugged up air filter or a bad injector...ect

Blue is the oil burning...

You can usually tell by the smell also...

well check for leaks anyways...my car was doing the same thing and there were never any oil puddles to suggest a leak but then i found out that my oil pan gasket was leaking onto the exhaust and that's what the burning smell was on the highway. it would be a lot cheaper to get an oil pan gasket fixed then to top off oil once a week i think. so check for leaks for sure.

use 20W50 OIL!! it's like JELLY!! that will not burn out very eeasily.. but definitely not good for winter.. it'll prolly freeze up competely...

I doubt he has leaks.. do you how much oil has to leak out for it to drop so low?? he would have noticed a smell or smoke fmor his car if it was burnin off the exhaust, especially that much oil!

I thought oil burning gives white smoke at the tailpipe?

burning oil is not normal, even for hondas. If you are burning oil, you have major engine wear. dark smoke is fuel, blue is oil. Lucas works very well, for what it is. You can't majically get rid of engine wear. Ride it out, or rebuild it. Those are your only non-bullshit answers. Oil additives won' t do anything. Thicker oil only prolongs the worst. If you love your honda, rebuild the motor. Don't be one of those yahoo's ridin around pukin out blue smoke.

my oil pan gasket leaks enough to have 0 oil after 3000km's and i don't have any smoke and i SOMETIMES can smell burning on the exhaust when im pinning it on the highway.

20W50 is your last resort to save a motor that's already dead. it's not recommended for a motor that just burns oil.

I remember that thread you started about replaceing the oilpan gasket... I went back to it and read that a mechanic told you that your oilpan gasket is leaking into your exhaust?? did you mean onto your exhaust? I just dont see how its possible for it to get into your exhaust without entering the compustion chamber??
