Octane effects Rich / Lean?
Does it really? If so why don't people buy Air-Fuel Mixture Gauges and see if the octane of fuel they use is appropiate.
Higher Octane - More Rich or the Opposite. |
Nope. Octane affects the ability to reduce knocking. The amount of fuel put in per volume of oxygen affects rich/lean.
If you have the right amount of fuel for the amount of oxygen, you would have a stoichiometrically (is that spelling right Ryan?...didn't you just love chemistry in HS?) correct reaction. Any less fuel and you would be running lean, any more and you would be running rich. Mark |
But an AFR Guage does wonders right?
If your running lean or rich, you know you got a problem with gas milage... |
Not wonders, but it will show you what the O2 sensor is reading...but it may not be with gas mileage...it could be air or ignition related too... Like bad spark could cause incomplete burn, causing the O2 sensor to read rich.

The A/F gauge is there just so you can make sure everything is running smoothly........If I start to notice the thing running in the red or green, rather that the yellow, I know there is somthing afoul.
Afoul.........a made a joke. haha It more for show..........I like the pretty lights. (but it does let me know when something might be wrong, befoire I do damage to the engine). most of the time, it should look like this..... http://www.gadgetseller.com/gauges/p...traliteani.gif |
