obd2a distributor on obd1?
 

i've searched and asked people and no one can give me an answer that is 100% certain. I'm swaping a built d16z6 (obd1) in for my d16y8. And the z6 has no distrubator/plugs/wires. I'm going to run a chipped p28 ecu with a obd2 to obd1 conversion harness so I "believe" I can use the obd2a distrubator on my obd1 motor. I know I can use the same plugs and wires but the dist., I'm not too sure if it will work.

Some people told me I need to re-wire my dist. or I can use an obd2a-obd1 adapter. But I don't want to bother with that all if it will work.

Do any of you guys know the answer? Thanks

Aslong as the pickup on the ignitor is the same as a Z6 pickup you should be fine. If the pickups are different then the gnitor wont get the proper signal from the ECU and you will have misfires.

Otherwise the distributors are the same, Ignition Coil, CKP, CYP & TDC will have to be matched to the wires leading through the body harness. The wires on the second seperate harness will also need to matched to your ignitor & tach wire.

I can make you a proper harness for it, but depending on the availability of the conversion harness, it might be cheaper just to buy the conversion harness.

so I probably need the adapter then.

100% You will be be able to use your D16Y8 distributor and you will not have to rewire the OBD2A distributor to run your D16Z6. You will be able to bolt it up to your D16Z6 motor and then plug it back into your stock OBD2A harness with no modifications.

One thing to note tho, the D16Z6 motor and the chipped P28 does not need the crank fluctuation sensor that is present and located in the oil pump on your old D16Y8 motor. So the plug end for that sensor will not be needed and you can leave it dangling or terminate it so it doesn't get caught on a belt or sumthing.

However, you will have to use the OBD2A to OBD1 conversion harness to allow you to plug your OBD1 chipped P28 into your OBD2A harness.

That OBD2A to OBD1 conversion harness will take care of the wiring for the distributor for you.

Also, incase you didn't know, OBD2 and OBD1 injectors use different plugs. So when you go to install your new D16Z6 you may want to use your OBD2A injectors so you will not have to cut and splice the old style plugs into your harness.

I knew about the injectors already though. Basically, everything except for the block and head and ecu will be obd2a.
