for something more 'interesting' that runs all the time, and provides relatively live feedback, check out scangauge:

I have an older revision, but functionality is the same. I'd sell you mine, as i'm in the market for a bluetooth tool instead of this display/clearing tool.

I dont agree with these scanners seeing as us mechanics invest a great deal of money into REAL scanners. These cheap scanners are just generic code readers. They dont help you diagnos anything, they cant display live data, they cant datalog, they can do engine controlls. They give you the code.... that is it. And a generic obd2 code for that matter. Mac and Snap-on make a nice entry level scanner which does almost all of the above for around 1100 bucks. I personaly own a genisys scanner which cost me almost 7000 bucks.

it all depends if you want to know why the CEL on or to diagnose why the CEL on. As 1sloweg says,a real good scanner can runs you thousands of dollar. You don't need to spend thousands of dollar just to use the scanner less then 10 times a year. The scanner that I brought cost me $11000.
