now what?

I've had my 98 civic stock for 5 years now, and as some of you already know, I've installed headers for my car(stock manifold cracked). Now it feels like I'm bogging. do I do the intake now, and if I do, which one? do I spend even more to do the muffler? do I HAVE to get CAT back? HELP!!!!!!!

appreciate everyone who has helped me.

esp, seems to me you drive a lot, right.... 200K on your 98 Civic? Well, muffler and intake are doable... what header did you get? What brand, material, and design (4-2-1 or 4-1). I would recommend an Apexi World Sport, they are affordable, but high quality. They are also very quiet. As for intake, considering the mileage you put on your car, I would stay stock with a K&N element (direct replacement). Tune your car up, like ignition freshening, have your injectors cleaned and balanced, new fuel filter, plus all the regular stuff. Reset your computer with the new mods... If you are still bogging after all this, I'd check other components like TPS, MAP, and other driveability systems.

Your other option is to just get a Y8 replacement exhaust manifold off the boards... they are cheap and plentiful.

thanks bbarbulo.....I put in the chikara(hedman) 4-2-1 headers. slightly larger diameters than stock.

was thinking SiR(or typeR) exhaust used.

but you DON't reccomend aftermarket intake huh?

thanks for the advice.

SiR or Type R won't fit your d-series block. Reason I don't want you to get an aftermarket intake is cuz you drive a severe number of kms and I doubt very much that you have the time to take good care of an AEM or Iceman. Right? So the safest bet for you is the stock box and K&N drop in element, cuz it's placed so that you can drive through the desert of Nevada or Arizona and not worry too much about placement. If you have the time to clean it and take good care of it, and don't mind spending $400 on an intake, get a AEM with a bypass valve. Good choice for headers... medium level headers... Good value for the price.

no believe me I do take care of my car bbarbulo. i change the stock element filter every oil change or every other. so I might consider a new intake. There is an AEM short ram intake kit for $150(pm me and I 'll let you know where)and I am considering it.

now exhaust....damn.....

bbarbulo, about resetting OBD.....???thanks for answering so many of my questions.

No prob... well, what are you trying to accomplish?? Just get rid of your bogging, right? Well, it's not necessarily a header issue... it may actually be that one of your sensors is getting a faulty reading that's not yet out of range. Or could be that your injectors are getting gummed up and tired. You can usually score a cheap set of low km injectors on the boards from someone who's gone turbocharged... like $40 usually, and sometimes you'll find some on Ebay too... you can use B16A or GSR injectors as well. Don't go over 240cc for a mostly stock engine. Now, for intake, you can get a short ram if you want, but really, I'd like to hear what you expect from your engine. Do you want the sound, the performance, the look, or just plain feel like a change... Ya, the short ram is rather cheap... if you can, get yourself a cold air system. It's a more involved install, but better results for sure. For me... I have an all stock engine right now cuz I knew I was either swapping or going turbo... I have already purchased a turbo... so for me, any N/A mods would have been pretty much thrown away. This way, I went straight to the correct path w/o wasting money on diversions. As for resetting the computer, all you do is disconnect the battery, or if you are lazy like me, just pull out the ECU fuses... leave them out for 5-10 minutes, and plug them back in...then start the car making sure you don't touch the throttle upon starting... let it run for a little bit, then go for a drive. The ECU memory will have been reset and it will better accept the modifications you do on your engine.

yeah I don't want to modify, I figured since I did the headers, I should do the rest of the breathing.

I'm tuning the car(spark plugs, maybe wires)when the weather gets better. Too cold, gonna freeze out there.

Then I am definitely gonna check out my injectors. I've also replaced my fuel filter once already and it looks like I need to do it again.

I mean I only use Sunoco or Shell and I never run dry(half tank minimum most of the time).....anyway.

I did the OBD reset....disconnected the battery. PLUS I had the gasket between the new headers and cat changed....and I replaced the spring kit that hold these to pieces together(apparently I had a bad leak(explains the nasty hissing)from worn gasket and weak clamp springs). NOW I DON'T BOG!!!!!

I've also noticed that when I take my revs up into the redline, the car keeps pushing! WoW! before, at about 6200(to 7200)it would just WAIL and scream and not accelerate any faster. Now the VTEC keeps pushing until the limiter cuts me off. Never would have thought. Been having fun heh heh.

thanks again

OK, if you are not up for modding more, just do the K&N drop in and that will help too... not noticably, but at least you can just wash it and reuse it.
