no start problems

Hey ppl

Got a question for ya's
My moms 88 CRX isnt starting - No click, no lights no nothing, boosted it - took it for a drive, ran for about an hour... turned it off and started it again a couple times - good.... next day no go... took the battery to canadian tire - said it was dead - i put a new battery in and it was fine for a day... obviously a draw from something - but nothing obvious... any ideas????

thanks in advance

alternator dead?

you can check with a multi meter, measure voltage at battery with car off.. then measure with car on.. should be about 1- 1.5 volt change.

Stock one Matt... Nippon Denso or Hitachi I suppose. My Autometer Volt gauge shows a steady rockin 14.6V ... as does my digital multimeter when I test for a hot wire.

I havent checked the alt yet - a good stock one should put out 14.4V btw... I am assuming that the alt is good as i can boost it and it runs fine...

you boost the battery, not the alternator... a dead alternator will still let the engine run, but the idiot light should come on.

somethings drawing current, pull some fuses one at a time and use a multi meter to measure current to see if it stops.

Found it finally! after pulling all the fuses and testing everything... we found that the altenator itself was giving the draw (5A!) it would charge fine, no lights would come on or anything, but there was a short inside... weird - I have never seen anything like this before... so new alt and its working fine now
