next mod?

hey guys, i just recently (last week) got my 2nd gen typee put in my 99 hatchback. i had a h22 in a coupe before, both fun motors. anyways im always looking for my ponies. currently i have an intake, high flowcat, 2.5inch exhaust to a stealth black muffler. i was thinking of a header but my buddy says keep the 4-1 stock header. body work and rims are coming, but the motor was my 1st mod so im looking into beefin it up. its my 1st typee so i dont really know much about cams, cam gears etc. let me know guys! thanks!

how much money you got to spend?

imported_torscot 04-May-2007 10:56 AM

1500-2000 grand

Visit the cam discussion thread and head work discussion thread to get some idea.

1500-2000 should give you a mild head work, bore out the TB + port match IM, decent set of cams and tuning. If you want to upgrade the valve springs, you could go over but there is always deals around.

imported_Kingjames1983 04-May-2007 12:03 PM

you could go cat cam valve train and camshafts which is what I have in my b16 and you would be just over 1g and spend the rest on head work.
They have almost the same specs as the skunk stg 2 and I dont think the are regrinds

Hytech style tri-y Header, Cams, valvetrain & tuning. 25-30whp, done. i got the cams and header if needed.

imported_torscot 04-May-2007 12:27 PM

so most likely im looking a headwork. if i do cams, valvetrain and tuning, do i need to replace my stock header? and what are good cams out there, ive heard good things about skunk2 stg2, how are blox cams? and when replacing cams, do the stock cam gears gotta go?

zeeman 04-May-2007 12:31 PM

i'd get adjustable gears if you're using aftermarket cams, this will help really dial them in for max power.
Buy m_powers stuff, the header he's got is sick and he's got some cams to pick from...lol.
If you wanna make the most power the stock header's gotta go, get something like a hytech tri-y. Type R's have enough compression to run a lot of different cams, but if you want more out of it, pull the head off (it'll be easier to replace the valve springs and retainers) and mill it a little bit to raise the compression.
And of course, tuning, do NOT skimp on tuning if you change your cams.

imported_Kingjames1983 04-May-2007 12:32 PM

you dont need to replace the header but eventually a full exhaust upgrade would be benefical for more flow.
I just told you the cheapest way to do it.
the stock cam gears dont have to go but with adjustables ones you can tune better.
BDL makes cam gears for cheap too.
Me set up is
cat cam camshafts
cat cam valves and retainers
BDL cam gears
shaved head
3 angle valve job
I think thats it.

if you have anymore questions about my set up PM me.

imported_torscot 04-May-2007 12:38 PM

alright, ill look into starting to peice things together. you guys have been a great help. and zeeman i hear you do some good tuning. hopefully meaning your not a cheap way out. and isnt a 2.5' exhaust big enuff for a built typee. i thought any bigger would be more for a turbo.

zeeman 04-May-2007 12:46 PM

2.5" exhaust is definately big enough, you do not need to go any bigger.

imported_Nicotine 06-May-2007 12:52 AM

turbo.

boost.

nuff said.

zeeman 06-May-2007 10:22 AM

werd, less money (in the long run) too.

I'm embarrased to say how much i've spent on the n/a setup. Especially compared to how much less some of my friends have spent on their boosted setups and how much more power they make....and their cars are just as reliable as mine.

This is why i have now gone boost myself.....woot
