Question Newbie Questions: What is a Test pipe?

Is it the mid pipe or the cat?

What will likely be different after swaping it in? More Smoke/Emission? Louder exhaust note? Smellier smog?

And how much HP am i expected to gain at the crank? just by this test pipe...

Test pipe is a fake Cat...only thing you will gain with a stock engine is a louder sound plus a ticket.

Also the exhaust smells like **** too.
I'm using a y7 mid pipe on b16 (for now)
and there is no cat on it. Smells horrible.

yeah having no cat will only yeild a few hp at most and it will make your car WAY louder, but not in a good way.
A test pipe is just a piece of pipe with 2 flanges on it to bolt in place of the cat, its stricly for track use only, then when you get home from the track you can bolt the cat back in...hence the name test pipe. IMO its not a permanent thing.

Loss of backpressure may lose power in lower end.

wouldn't a test pipe on the street result in a $300 ticket?
