New and looking to upsize
Hi,
I very new to engine modification and Im looking to drop a bigger
engine in my 2000 Dx Hatchback,
I m looking for suggestions on what would be a good match for my vehicle. I ve got about $5000 to spend and I think I have a D16y7 engine in there now, with 106k on it and Im hopeing that anyone can suggest something that has worked for them in their vehicle.
Ideally I thinking something that s realtively easy to put in and has some good performance.
Any suggestions would be welcome

well depends if you are doing the labour or not. If you are doing the labour i would say b18c5 (integra type R) all the way. But if you are paying someone else to do it then go with a b18c1 (GSR). Another good swap for relatively cheap is a b20 with a b16 hydro tranny, that would make your hatch a fun little street car b/c it has lots of torque.
Stay away from a b16, although tempting b/c of its price, trust me it takes work to make b16's fast. But you said you have $5K to spend, so you could get some good cams, valve springs, headwork and the typical intake, header, exhaust, t/b, intake manifold and have a potent little b16 hatch. Its up to you. I personally would just start with a better platform and go from there. B16's are kinda torqueless but love to rev.

man... don't steer this guy to a B20 build when he clearly can't do the build himself.... best option is straight B18C5 drop in... stock Honda reliability with 200 crank HP (165ish wheel HP). That's nearly double stock power at the wheels.

To add, a B20 with a B16 tranny would be fun but also i dont know who here wants to be revving at 5000rpm in 5th doing 120km/h....
For $5000 you could go to an importer right now i grab a B18C5 for like $4000 and then for $1000 you could either pocket it and install the engine yourself or pay to have someone install it into your car.

Thanks a Ton everyone, I m obviously not gonna do the install myself I lack the skill and knowledge. Im more of an interior guy myself.
I think the votes are in, It'll a B18C5 for me, Thanks for all the input.
That should definitly make it more fun driving around.

besides what I said in PM... I remembered one more option... you can look into having a reputable shop source and install the engine... like Concepts on Wheels... they will test the engine integrity and prolly do service on it like waterpump, timing belt and so on.. so that you get a worry-free engine that's up to it's maintenance.

well you do pay a bit of a premium over buying an engine from someone who requests you meet in a walmart parking lot and bring a bag full of cash... shady! LOL
but the peice of mind is worth it I guess?

altech, rt motorsports, concepts on wheels im pretty sure can all help you out. If it was me i would go to one the jdm importer places (that you've read about and has good feedback) and bring cash and you should be able to get a crazy deal on a type-r Swap.
