New Headers

A little while back I was asking around about improving the performance of my car (D16y7, 106HP). I wanted to get a turbo, and I've had the opportunity to speak to someone who installed a turbo (they had an automatic too). I've decided to go through with it, and make my next purchase a turbo kit (w/ headers, intake, and possibly intercooler). I just had one question to ask...

Are performance headers significantly louder than stock headers?

I'm not the type to attract attention to myself or my car, and I would prefer to keep the car moderately quiet. Is this possible with performance headers installed?

the turbo kit will come wiht a turbo manifold, which will eliminate the need for a header.

a header by itself does not make more noise. I did my headers first on my D16Y8 and I could hear a faint new sound, which was a hissing, but nothing other than that-afterwards I put in a CAI so I can't tell anymore.

However, a turbo kit is something I don't know and it will be irrelevant as to what performance headers will sound like.

Thanks for the help guys...alot of times I end up hearing a bunch of crap from people who seem to be talking nonsense...someone told me that new headers would make my car sound like a friggin fart can, and that I would have serious problems with my emission testing.

forgot to add....if you do hear more rumbling or LOUD hissing, then they didn't install it right A....and B some of your exhaust gaskets need to be replaced...and C spring kit that holds your cat to the bottom end of header needs to be replaced.

On that same note, after installing headers, you need to go back after 2 weeks and get the bolts re torqued and tightened or they come loose(BAD).

That was my situation.

Here are some HP claims from various companies.

1)Edlebrock 170whp. w/Garret T28 @ 7psi $3700
2)Turbonetics 225whp. w/ T3T4 hybrid. @ 8psi $3800
3)Greddy 185whp w/IHI @ 6psi $2600

Hard to predict the output when you don't have the specifics.
I would swap for the Y8 head when going turbo.

I can tell you what a turbo setup will sound like........

ppppppppppssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

dang, i had a link w/ a buncha BOV sounds, where the heck did it go.....

oopsie, prices are in USD
..and can definitely be found cheaper.

Just to confirm, do you have an auto as well?

If so, just to let you know...I'm aiming for ~170HP total after boost...and even there I'll be weary of my tranny. Most likely i'm thinking that'll be around 7psi.

This is something i found from another site, pros/cons:

Heres some insight for those wondering about the auto tranny/turbo set ups.
Overall its great, especially through first gear. The biggest dislike about it is the fact that gears change at about 45k RPM, you see boost with the Greddy kit at about 3k. So its like you get a big kick in the *** then a slap in the face when you shift to second. Alot of the times, when you are really on it 1st gear won't change until about 55k.

NOTE: Some of you may already know this, but seeing as how I have a DX and just put the EX cluster in with a tach, all the exact numbers are new to me. So if this is boring you then...

Also you will not boost too much if you are already at high speed and then punch it. But that could be the same with a 5 speed.

Dead Stop Launch: The turbo is great here. I usually just ease on the gas then get on it, theres the kick in the *** part. Or if some ricer is next to you with theire loud *** muffler. Just sit there and put your foot on the gas and hold your RPM, when its time to go, let off the brake and your boosting right then.

170whp is fine for auto tranny, going beyong that ie. 200whp you will start having problems....if you are concerned for the tranny, invest in a tranny cooler; I think they're like -/+ $200. @7psi your safe w/ a proper fuel and spark management; run high octane like 91/94 to avoid detonating. 10psi is the limit on stock internals...again w/ proper tuning.

my car is manual....I haven't boosted yet, but once i'm done sourcing out my parts i'll be putting it together....for now its read read and more reading.
