New Civic. (Annoying Problem)

I just got my new '93 Honda Civic DX 2 Door Coupe
(Auto.. yes, i know, the only draw back!). Its in relativly great condition. New head gasket, waterpumps, brakes, catalitic converter, axel boots, plugs, wires, speakers, deck, with 100k/km on it. Now the only thing wrong with it is that every time I give it gas or am accelerating, It makes a rattaling noise. When i let it coast or idle, it stops making the noise unless I hit a small bump. I checked a number of bolts and screws around the engine compartment, I checked the heatshield off the manifold piping, I even had the cracked wheel boots changed, and it still makes the F'in noise. Anyone here have any ideas what it might be that is making this noise? It is faint, but its driving me insane, You can really hear it when all the windows are up and the music is off, it gets loud. A friend with a '96 Civic CX Hatchback said it was the heatshield and he had the same problem but a plumbing fastner fixed it, but I don't have the same heat shield to be making the noise.

Sorry if this is in the wrong area of the forums. New here.

Yeah man, the exhuast hangers and their welds all seem fine, as do the rubber dealies. I have no clue where this noise is coming from. In driver seat, it sounds like engine compartment, drivers side, close to the driver, like inbehind the peddles but up a bit maybe. I have no clue. Argh!

Give your interior a once over.

Tighten screws and nuts if needed..

Remove all loose change and crap.

Make sure spare tire is secured.

Well, seeing as how the car is new and there is nothing in the interior after a 3 hour clean job.. Its definatly somewhere in the engine or front dash, but why only when I acclerate or give it gas?

Condition of mid pipe?

My HB had a similar problem a couple years back.

That fixed it.

If not bring it to a meet and we WILL find where it is coming from..

so your saying you don't have a heat shield for your exhaust ....? did I understand correctly?

I have a 93 hatch and my heat shield is rattling like crazy .... at first I thought it was the glove box ... but buddah's mechanics had a listen and told me it was the heat shield ...

is it a sort of ting ting ting ting noise heard at around 3200 to 4000 rpm? thats where my noise happened now it gotten worse car goes in on monday to get fixed...

however none of this applies if you don't have a heatshield in which case I'd say follow the other advice provided by the other people here...

rip off the heat shield... you don't need it unless you park on grass

Even then you don't need it, as long as it's not your lawn!

Ok, everything from the cat. convertor back is new. I Do have a heat shield, but its not like the one on the 96' CX HB, but the mechanic checked it and said that is not what is rattaling. The only problem with coming to a meet is that I live up north, Simcoe county, Barrie. Im not used to Toronto, and have no clue about where the meets are much less how to get to one. But hey, might make a fun day trip. (My civic would be shown up, its only stock..)

Ok! I called the dealer. I talked to him for a few minutes and exaplined the problem, then he was like.. 'Oh yeah, now that you mention it, I'm 100% sure that the rattle is from the baffle in the exhuast.' . Ok, well, im dumb, what and where is this baffle, what does it do... how much does it cost to get a new one if that will fix the problem. Any ideas?

I would say it’s the heat shield. Check the whole exhaust system. Mine rattles when I begin to accelerate and I have a 00 Civic SiR.

The stock exhaust systems on civic are garbage.

It most likely is your midpipe..

I've had cars where the exhaust seems fine, heatshield and everything.. but a piece is broken inside the midpipe.. don't know how the hell to explain it but, somehow something broke inside and rattled like crazy. Could be really small but it doesn't takke much to rattle.

The easiest way to figure it out is to get under the car while it's running and push on things to locate the problem area.. Got any friends with hoists?

Does it happen when you press the gas in neutral? or do you have to be driving? Cuz then it could be a transmission issue.

When you gas, your increasing the rpms and different rpms cause different vibrations through the car. So at one point in the rpm scale, you hit the perfect vibration to make whatever it is rattle!
