Neutral High Revs

i was chilling with one of my girlfriends tonite in her standard y7 tonite. we were in the parking lot with the car on for about an hour. prior i popped the hood to look at the air filter just because i knew it had not been changed in a year or so. upon inspection it was filthy so i dusted it off and replaced it.

after idling for about an hour we drove home and while driving home the car was pullign when not on the gas.
after we put the car in neutral and the revs were very high, no tach on the car but by the sounds of it it was about 4000k-4500 rpm.
we turned the car off and it sort and it sort of stalled.
after turning it back on the revs just idled around 4-5k

i check the pedal to see if it was depressed as well as checking the throttle in the engine incase it was too tight and its all fine.

could it have something to do with her riding the **** off the clutch?
when we first went out the car was on empty and it would start then turn of due to lack of gas. once we got it started by turning it on and giving gas we went to the gas station and filled it.

what could be the problem?

thanks for feedback.

Sounds like a vacuum leak.

When checking the air filter, did u disconnect anything by mistake?

I doubt it was 4 - 5k rpm.

i have y7 and a y8, i know what 4-5k rpm sounds like.

i didnt disconnect anythign other than the 4 clips that i put back, and nothing fell into the intake.
