Negative effects on Short Ram Intake

hihi~~~
Suppose a Short Ram Intake is installed correctly and is mechanically sound, what kind of negative effect would it have on the engine, the performance, the economy, or the overall functionality of a car??

Thanks!

and because its louder you'll floor it more and loose fuel millage...

doesn't a short ram intake reduce performance by sucking in hot air from the engine?

I read an article stating the effects of air intakes. The long, cold air intake produces more torque, while a short intake produces more hosrepower. My car is an EX that had a huge intake muffler buried in the fender. By removing that, I have a large whole through to the ground. That is where my filter sits over. I don't know what my air intake is off of (bought used), but is seems longer than normal.

I thought that short ram is good for high end power and long ram is good for mid... or it could be the other way around...

I think you guy got things a little backwards, short ram gives you more torque due to the shorter length of the tube having less air resistance, a cold air intake because it draws more cold air in the faster you go gives you more top end HP but less torque due to the length of the tube and all the extra bends.

I think your wrong. Check Aug 04 Dsport mag. Has a write up on intakes.

When AEM make there intakes they do over a hundred dyno runs changing things as they go. On some vehicles a short ram actually produces more power then a cold air and vice versa. With most vehicles the difference between the two is like 1-3 hp or ft/lbs of torque (this is not noticeble unless it is on a dyno). For the simple fact you SHOULD NOT RUN A COLD AIR INTAKE IN THE WINTER i prefer the short ram.

long ram is like having, long runners but large plennum, good for torque,

short ram is like short intake runners, good for top end !...

short ram will make the car lose a little bit HP in low RPM and burn more fuel !! that's the obvious effect!

How do you figure a short ram burns more gas?

He's probably means you use more gas when you drive your car at faster speeds because of the intake???

You use more gas because you'll want to hear the roar of the intake, thats what happened with me when I first installed my CAI.

geez your all wrong

the type of air it sucks in doesn't matter... here's why....

take a short ram intake sucks in hot air... fromt he engine bay thats a given we all know this

the cold air intake lets use AEM for example sucks in cold air.. should produce more power right? wrong with the engine and standard working temperature the AEM cold air intake (and all other cold air intakes I've see) get hot... really hot .... hot enough to burn you... so whats this doing to all that nice cold air you took in outside the engine bay? well it's heating it up.. by the time that air reaches the combustion chamber it's as hot as it would be if it came in from a short ram air intake

ok so whats the difference then between them.... well one has a long tube the other has a short tube...

this if you look at dyno graphs causes an interesting effect. they both provide a gain over the entire power band... however a cold air intake will provide a larger gain in the low and mid sections of the rpm range while a short ram provides better gain over the high end... also where the RPM where the Maximum gain in horsepower is located will be lower on a CAI then a short ram.

listen to jay

as for intakes.... anything less restrictive to air flow will gain you HP

by running no filter at all will give you good gains

there was a test done to make $5 intakes from parts, and a couple guys made some, and dynod them and youd be surprised fromt he gains

its not a science..

cold dense air will make more power than air quality on a muggy day!

I've had both an AEM cold air and ractive short.. I personally liked the cold air a LOT more than short ram.. specifically for the grrr that it produces. deeper and more 'gangster' than a cheesy cheap teeny bopper short ram. makes a better impression IMO

however the short ram gave a highly addictive buzz between redline and fuel cutoff (7000-7200)-- at that point the sound and sensation is unbeleivable. like it really is being rammed with the maximum amount of air it can handle

you will **** up your tranny either way.. lol.

IMO, unless you improve the exit you aren't getting much in either application. Improving the air flow in and out, not only gives you minor gains throughout the powerband, but it is also more fuel efficient.
