Need Some Guidance
 

Hey everyone. Just wanted to intorduce meself. I am new around here and kinda new to tuning aswell. I am just wondering where to go from where I am now. I have a 1996 EX sedan that I got from me mum. Now its got the d16y7 and auto combo with 183000Km on it. I love the car cus I grew up with it, been driving it for about 8 years. I want more though now that its mine. I was thinking maybe a b18c1 (i think thats the GSR no?) or b18c5 swap. I was wondering what I need for it ie engine, tranny, ecu, etc. Also where is there a reputable shop that can do all of this for me ie; source engine and such and install. What would it run me? I am looking to spend $5G maybe $7G most for everything. Is it a problem that my car will also need to be swaped to manuel? I love the sedan body style so i dont want to dispense with it. Anyother suggestions you guys and gals could give me? Thanks for your help.

do a search. there are a lot of threads about people asking the very same thing. you may have an easier time finding a b16. i think i saw a K-series jdm swap in the classifieds... something to consider.

with a spending limit like that you can have a nice quick sedan, the choices are endless. Check out Teknotik, definately. They sell jdm engines and are a reputable shop.

Hey thanks for the advice. If I am not mistake the b16 is the JDM CTR engine no? Are these able to pass Ontario's stupid smog laws? Again thanks!

The ek jdm ctr has a b16b, but its not the only civic to have a b16. The eg jdm sir came with a b16a2, as did the usdm/cdm ek sir and the highest trim level del sol (cant remember what it was called), and there is a b16a1 in some ef's.

As for the smog laws I hear its even more stringent in Japan so the engines themselves shouldnt be a problem, and I think theres something about being tested as a hotrod or something if your displacement is bigger, I'm not sure.
Anyways your questions can be answered with a little bit of searching, use the search feature and google and you'll find out lots.

If you want manual, just make sure that when swapping in the new engine you buy a manual tranny. When swapping engines, you will need a new tranny anyways.

just a small run down of parts needed to accomplish what you want.....

engine
tranny
ecu
engine harness (not necessary but will need some sockets if your putting a vtec motor)
axels
clutch lines
clutch master cylinder
brake pedal
clutch pedal
clutch fluid resovoir
shifter linkage
shift boot
shift knob
etc.........

when buying a motor it is also recommended that you change things like waterpump, timing belt, spark plugs, spark plug wires, rotor, distributor cap etc.... *some things can be salvaged but its always easier to do it at this stage before motor is in hence saving money*

there are several motors you can put into your ride......

B series (b16a2, b18b, b18c, b18c1, b18c4, b18c5, b20b, b20z)
H series (h22a2, h23a)
F series (f22b, f20b, f20c)
K series (k20a, k20a2, k20a3, k20z, k24 )

if your budget is 7 grand and you would like something really new in terms of swap and power I would recommened a K series Motor. you can pick up a k20a2 (acura rsx type s) motor with tranny ecu and harness maybe even axels for about 2500-3500. With the rest buy all the parts needed and swap it in yourself with some help of a friend and be smoking cars left right and centre and be considered one of the first ek model sedans to have k series (there are some but not alot).

other then that if you plan on keeping the motor stock after the swap i would recommened any of the following R series motors b16b, b18c, b18c5. The b16b is a civic type r motor it is a destroked b18c motor and please do not confuse it with any other b16 motors. this motor is an R motor therefore it stands true to its name by being only .89 seconds off the actual integra tpe r *if i remember correctly* or you can opt for the jdm type r or the usdm type r. all three of these motors come with lsd on the tranny and are already tuned to perfection.

I could be wrong, but a Type S motor & tranny for 2500-3500?
Isn't that a little unrealistic? Anyways, is that 5G - 7G including exhaust, suspension, etc.?

Hey thanks for all the replys! The $5-7g is pretty well for the swap. I would kick about with that for a while saving some cash then do the suspension and what not. It sounds like I need need alot of parts to do this manuel conversion will it still fit in my budget? You guys are great thanks so much for the info.

i have seen tons of these motors for that price bracket some even cheaper.
i see k20a3's from anywhere between 1200-1800 all the time aswell.

these motors are **** believe me. Well not really **** but have a ****ty resale value because the swap is not common enough and the swap parts are cheap enough for everyone to fork the money to do the swap. Until the price and labour for the swap itself gets cheaper by like a half atleast these motors will only go for that price. because not alot of people have the ep3 sir for them to swap the k20a2 type s into. and people who drive a non type s version want type s but again not alot out there.

well for $5000 you could get a b18c1 (gsr) installed and swapped over to manual. But make sure to replace the timing belt/water pump ($200), and i would recommend changing the clutch while its out. Its better to spend another $400 on a clutch now then $400 plus another $400 for install of the clutch ($800) when the engines in the car. So it will be another $1000 for things i would change before even putting the engine in the car. I would also be prepared to get spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor as well shortly after the swap. I am just repeating what Team Rukus has said, he knows as well b/c he's been there and done that.

Again thanks for all of the info. Sounds like a freakin hell of an ordeal to get this all done. In your experiances what was service like after the install? Was it a pain to find parts for repair and also was it difficult to find people to service these JDM engines?

Finding parts for swapped cars isn't a problem. There are always the USDM/CDM equivalents.
JDM engines are the same thing and use the same parts (with some exemptions with emission controls) as us and canadian models so don't worry.
