need opinions on lowering in winter
ok, i looked around the boards and didnt really find much about why not to lower ur car during the winter, well ne ways, i been wanting to drop for a while, i finally have some cash saved up and am looking to buy h&r race springs or a cup kit. now, i know the cup kit is gonna cost me more, but it has adjustable ride hight, i dont care about being slammed thru the winter, i just want a stiffer ride, so i think this is what i want, but i dont know if i wanna spend the 1000-1200 cad for this kit. k now onto my next question, being dropped 2.5 inches witht he h&r race springs (replacing shocks as well kybs) what kind of problems am i looking at during the winter months, i know im gonna snow plow but thats not an issue to me really, i have a stock bumper and the car is getting painted in the spring as well as lip kit etc. i have pretty damn good winter tires with 85-90% tread left, would it be compltetly mental to lower thru the winter, i really only want the stiff ride, but im not gonna buy like h&r oe sports just for the winter then get race for spring so i figure ill just drop it now. on heavy snow days i dont have to use my car.. so im not really to worried, just a few things bother me, how close will my oil pan be to the ground, with h&r race springs, will they be stiff enuf i wont bottom out and possibly do damage to my engine or underbody of my car. i will be adding 3 or 4 tie bars as well, front upper rear upper and lower, possibly front lower, althought i heard being lowered it will get bashed to ****. i just want some peoples opinions before i spend a shitload of money and becomes insanly depressed because i screwed myself

i say do it.if you are not gonan drive it on the snowiest of days then its all gonna be road salt and just ice conditions is wha tyou are left with.......if you change your shocks and since its only 2.5..you should be fine....this whole lowering is overrated ,unless you are completly droppped........like 3 or more inches on stock shocks and a lip kit...then pray

Last winter I drove my car with the H&R Sports on it (1.75f/1.5r), and all season tires. I never got stuck, and I didn't snow plow, but I was dragging the exhaust through the deep stuff, and pulled it off a hanger a couple of times. I also did some damage to the plastic cover that goes under the rad backing up, and pulling snow into it. This winter the OEM springs are going back on it just to be safe. If the Sport springs aren't low enough, and the Race is too low, then try Progress. They are 2 all around. My H&R's may be for sale in a month or so too.

I have the sportline springs (1.8"?) and I drove the car on the snowiest days last season - even had snow going over the hood of the car. With snow tires I never got stuck. btw, the cup kit is not height adjustable - it is just springs with matched shocks.
I also have a lip on the front which wasn't a big problem in the snow, just watch out for ice. I would also highly recommend snow tires. Anyone who says you can't drive a lowered car in the winter hasn't done it (3" drops and deep body kits don't count as they are barely driveable in the summer).

now, about your lowering, this isn't Siberia, we have snow plows, and well... if you live in the GTA and there is a snowfall, WORRY NOT MY FRIEND, THE ARMY WILL SAVE YOU! assclowns...
anyways, I've never personally driven a lowered car in the winter cuz I never had to... but the roads are relatively clean and you'll have no problem if you don't mind having your **** scrape the frozen pile of slush in the middle of the road, and your bumper plowing everything in sight. But that only happens like a dozen times over the entire winter when the snowfall is actually significant. Key thing is to remember to keep it out of curbs and ditches.

yea I had the same problem (i couldn't come up with a decision if i should lower my car)
I already have the coilovers and also a muphler.
what do you guys think.... should I lower it and throw the muphler on? or just lower and leave the muphler till spring or summer?

I'll be driving my car, lowered and all... since I can't afford a beater and don't wanna change back to stock springs. But, if it wasn't lowered yet, I'd wait until spring to do so... just as I'll be waiting until then to install my sideskirts.

another thing is, lowering in the winter doesn't give you the same advantages cuz traction is ultimately the limiting factor in handling. it's smarter to invest in good rubber for the correct season first!!

I just dont see the point,,, most guys drive lowered cuz they dont want to spend the cash to have the springs swaped and pay for the alignments... Your already up and ready for the snow, so just fight the urge and wait it out... your not ganna pick up chicks in the winter with your car looking all pimp and slammed anyway, and you cant drive agressively in the winter anyway... So I say leave the shocks and springs on your dresser and drool over them evey night till spring:P Pluse you said your getting paint ect... so do it all at once, it will feel like you just got a new car when you do all ready for the dry pavement!
Pluse wouldnt it be in the back of your head all winter that the pesky salt and sand is eating away at your new investment(springs and shocks)? why torchure new equipment like that right from day one?
I dont know, this is just coming from a practical point of veiw, it only makes sense every which way you look at it...

ya well i made a decision i bought shocks today and im picking up my skunk 2 springs thursday im gonna get a camber kit as well. should all be installed within the next week, ill get pics as soon as i can, bbarbulo ya the army will save us all hahahahahaha man when i read that i pissed. ne ways ill try her out if i get real pissed lowered in the winter, ill just drop my stock springs back on so imma try it ne ways

since you got shocks AND springs, may I suggest getting new top mounts and bumpstops as well... that way you can keep your **** as one assembly, so if you do need to go back up, the swap will take 1/2 hour instead of 5 hours. Plus your ride will be all ****** plush and **** cuz of the new top mounts - not the old compressed beat up mounts. Just a thought. Even if you hook up with junkyard units, you can just swap busnings in them for that as-new feeling.

i was thinking about buying a bushing kit, i wanna replace the lcas because im almost positive the bolt will be seized with the bushing, plus i may as well while i got the **** apart, what would u recommend i buy, oem top mounts or something like es?

good job....u keep the mods comming...you mite as well get it done now ,asap , since its getting cold outside, and you have 1 month to enjoy, before you will stop carring.........haveing a lowered car is overated.........is just HYPE>......

this winter is gonna be my first being lowered.... i'm pushing 5 maybe 6 inches of ground clearance if i'm lucky so we'll see how it goes...
are you buying those agx shocks used?? cause if you lower them more then 1.5" the warrenty is void....
for mounts get prothane.... they make energy suspension mounts feel like warm butter

no the kybs im buying are new, the guy at the shop told me they have a lifetime warrenty, i said to him doesnt lowering it void the warrenty, he said no, but he hasnt had to return any in the time he has been in business, he has returned tokios (sp) the blues and a few other shocks no probs wit the kybs,
to upgrade my bushings in my suspension, which ones will make the most difference, lca's, top mounts? i just wanna get a list of bushings that either i can replace since ill have it all apart or that would be worth while to replace while im doing this ne ways. im going to be doing the install at my school with a hydro lift air tools so i hope those lca bolts crack easy i dont wanna break em off cause then ill be screwed, another thing, for people who have done this, well changing their shocks ne ways cause thats when u gotta unbolt from the lca especially the rears, did u have alot of troiuble, should i buy a few new bolts incase i break the old ones or just put new ones in ne ways?

i just got some new LCAs... well not new but not having shocks attached cause mine are fuct....
for the bushings you can buy a kit that has all hte suspenion bushing in it... that is what you wanna do cause if you just change a few bushings it'll still feel soft from the stock bushings that are still there.... from people i have talked to who have done the bushing change its a very time consuming thing though.... but well worth it in the end
