Need New Transmission... Help Please
 

So, I have got lots of noise coming from down under and when I press the clutch in, it goes away. Many people thought this was the throw bearing in my clutch so I had the clutch replaced. Guess what, it wasn't the clutch.

Now I'm being told it is something in my transmission and according to this post , it looks like it is my output shaft bearing.

Does this sound right? If so, it looks like I need a new transmission. I haven't replaced a tranny before nor have I done much research. Can you guys help lead me in the right direction as to what to put in, where to get it, etc. I'm under a tight budget now that I've put in the clutch so I'm thinking of going used. Any comments are welcomed, thank you!

P.S. The worst part is, I'm going on a road trip this coming Thursday to the East Coast! Think I can get it done in time?

i have exactly the same type of issues, which makes my transmission VERY loud. It doesn't actually matter much, unless you hear grinding. I've been driving with my noisy transmission for years.

My understanding is the transmission would survive, until something else in it dies, or the noise is so loud you can't deal with it. I'm replacing my transmission because i also have syncro problems, but that is very different.

My tranny used to make a metal ching (best way to explain it), then i had to replace the tranny housing and after i did, the noise went away, so obviously it was either the mainshaft or countershaft bearing(s) b/c they're pressed into the tranny housing and thats all i changed.
It just sucks that you have to drop the tranny again to replace the bearings, its not overly difficult. Honestly, i think the hardest part would be getting the c-clip apart enough to be able to separate the two halves of the tranny (to take it apart).

That quote you have is way off with labour and pricing. It doesnt take one hour.. it pays 4.6 hours to do a clutch kit.. and to do the input shaft I would assume pays around 2.0 once the trans. is out.

But you are fine to drive for awhile (ive been driving for a long time with my bearing shot) Yes it bugs me, but if it aint broke i dont fix it lol. Anyways, untill it starts to make a really loud grinding (which ive seen before) you[ll be find.

Now there are some cases where even a small grinding can destory your transmission because the bearing(s) now have play. But if you have a d-series tranny, who cares.

Hmmm, well the noise has been around for about 7 months and now is getting pretty bad. It started off very quiet and now is quite loud. What is the worst that could happen? This trip will be about 4,500km so if it's going to crap out I'd rather have it fixed now. But, if you guys are pretty confident it will be ok then I might chance it. I'll post a video clip later so you can hear how loud the noise is.

If I were to get a tranny, what kind am I looking at and what is the price range usually? Thanks.

I think your car (EK coupe?) uses the S40 transmission and costs about 250-300... install is about 4hrs. Total cost at a regular rate would run you 500-700$ including parts.

But its up to you. I doubt it'll blow in 4500km (could be wrong). If it was my car i would just make sure the oil is topped and i would be on my way.

But if it gives you peace of mind on your trip, then get it done.

its been awhile... at least a year. doesn't bother me at all cause my car is so loud as it is (no interior, exhaust, etc).
