Need help!! rust brake lines --added pictures
Hi all,
I have a 96CX hatch. My mechanic just pointed out all my brake line to the rear drums are very rusty.. he said replacing them cost ~$800.. i am not sure if he meant all 4 of them or just the rear ones..
My brakes are pretty responsive now
1) do you guys suggest replacing it?
2) how much should the labour or the job cost??
3) should i get honda brake pipes or some 3rd party stainless steel pipes?
Thanks alot

How would they rust? Are they not rubber for the most part? The rust would be one the outside and should not effect the way your brakes operate. You said they feel fine, so I'd get a second opinion.

my old 94 civic supposidly had rusty lines when I sold it, and the new owner got it fixed by her mechanic. Now her mecahnic was her dads good friend so I don't know if he was telling the truth or what...
but yeh the rubber lines are just a short piece for flex on the front/back the rest is hard

but to answer the question, if the lines are in fact rusting through, go to parkway honda and purchase new lines from them. these ARE brake lines after all, you don't want that to fail on you. only trust OEM.

ur mech is a crook?
well... if i were you, might as well get a rear-disc conversion with low km lines, rotors, pads, etc... install them with one of our affiliates like one of the scotts... $800 should be more than enough... its better than just replacing the brake lines and staying with drums...
oh yeah... check with a 2nd mech for more opinions... seriously, i driven a 91 hatch, 92 hatch, now a 96 coupe... none had rusted brake lines... and yes, they are original, not replaced yet... still has life left...

re
thanks all.
i called up Honda and even they quote me 3 hours labour + parts (~200)... i have no idea how my mechanic came up with that kind of number....
I toke a pic of the brake lines with my cell phone. I will post it for ya all as a reference as soon as i find out how to use rogers/geocity hosting...

my ef back in 2 years... looks much worse than that... or maybe i was just lucky that it didn't need replacement yet... but anyways, your mechanic is a cheapass.... you should go back and talk to him again asking him exactly what needs to replace (parts by parts)... i think as a consumer/client, you have some rights to know what to be fix, what work are performed, and what parts were required.... i always do that with my mechanic... that's how i learn too...
good experience, now you know who's good and who's bad... haha
