Need Help. Fuel light stayed on

Hi, guys. Can you guys give me some suggestions? I have a 97
Civic Si. About 2 days ago, I went to fill up the tank with Shell
Gold. About 30 minutes later on my way to work, the fuel (yellow light) came on. I called Honda, and they said I may need to replace the fuel sensor assembly (approx $200.00 CDN). There is about 122000 kms on my car. Therefore it is no longer under the factory warranty. Can you guys give me some suggestions? Like is this a common thing for my model? Do I really need to pay $200.00 to replace this senor? Thanks guys.

Peace

Fu(k the $200... take your cluster out and remove the bulb for the "fuel low" light. The gauge still works and that sensor has no other purpose than to turn that light on and off when your fuel is low. I can't imagine you ever waited to see the light before you filled up anyway so what good is it? Just remove the bulb and your little problem goes away forever...at no charge.

I agree...you don't need a light to tell you to fill up! Pull the bulb and be on your way.

Thanks for your input guys. I'm gonna see if in fact Shell gasoline has anything to do with it. I just hope it will not lead to a bigger problem in the future like engine failure or something stupid. Once again thanks.

Peace

There was a newspaper article where Shell has admitted it's gas has been fouling up the sensors in fuel tanks. Shell is reimbursing anyone who has had this problem. The article was in most newpapers within the last few months. See if you can find the article on the net in the archives of the TORONTO STAR or even call Shell Customer Relations. It's very widely publicized so I doubt Shell will give you to much of a Hard time about it.
