Need Help Emision Test
 

i just got emision test done at CT and my B16 EG failed...It had a high HC and NO reading, but everything else is ok..need help on what i can do to make it pass before i go for retest.

A tune up? Just a guess.

did they test it under stock civic specs or under "modified" which it should be tested under cause u dont have a stock civic motor.

First those guys dun warm up their cars. What engine u got in there now? How could u get High HC and High nox? U can't get both of them up. HC and CO normally goes together and NOX is like separate. If HC and CO goes up the NOX goes down or the other way around. If all of them fail like HC, Co and nox then it is the Cat, but u never mentioned Co. How was the Co? Just passed or did it passed with flying colours.

put the high octane fuel, drive for about half n hour n get the engine really hot. Get it tested under modified...

maybe he had a typo and typed NO when he meant to type CO..meh, either ways...if that dont help...look for a jdm header that has the cat right on the header/downpipe. I had one of those in my eg when I bought it...2 cats do the trick lol. right after the test I swapped back to the freeflow dc header :)

Couldn't disagree with you guys more on this high octane gas theory.
High octane gas is harder to ignite. If all of it is not completely burned in the engine, it comes out of tailpipe as HC. Possibly leading to another failure.

Its actually called "hot rod". They should of put it in that section so they can put in that theres a bigger engine, and the limits would also be higher.

I don't think you can test the car as a hot rod unless the vehicle is equipped with a bigger displacement engine. The B16 is after all still a 1.6L. If he had a 1.8L or bigger he could, because those GEN Civics were never equipped with that size engine.

My H22 Civic was tested as a hot rod.

I think i know what i'm talking about since i am a emissions inspector. When i get a situation like this it goes under hot rod.:marchmell

new plugs gapped properly, check timing, oil change...

Do you have to specially request this and can they deny you of that request?

Well, every emission's inspector thinks differently. Any shop I've visited told me that it's only considered a HOT ROD if the engine displacement is larger than stock. Anyways, I'm sure your job is very fullfilling and you're probably very dedicated to it, so I won't doubt you on your knowledge.

Generally most inspection shops don't give a flying Fack about what engine is under there.. Unless you tell them to test as a hot rod they usually wouldn't even consider it. And yes they can deny your request if they feel it doesn't fit the category.
