Need help ASAP (speedo)
When I went to turn the car on after work, the check engine light came on. I'm like, wtf turned it off and on again the same thing. When i stepped on the gas the speedometer just kept jumping. Started to drive the car hoem and it ran fine. The speedo just kept jumping when driving and @ idle. The car would aslo idle at a low range then move up to 700 when in neutral.
It's a 96 D16Y7 5 speed
Any ides on what it might be and how I can fix it
please

Sorry, define VSS Gear And how to go abouts changing it.
I tried the paperclip trick and it came up like this
4 long lights 1 short =O-2 Sensor Heater
6 long 5 short = Secondary O-2 Sensor Circuit
nothing about VSS
what would be the common symptoms of the ones mentioned above?
Also if I need to replace these, any ideas on price of parts?

Man... sounds expensive...
Really, there are no symptoms to the above other than a slight reduction in mileage and a CEL... Trust me I tried it... mileage drops about 50 kms/tank. That is all.
What strikes me is that BOTH O2 sensors are having issues, one with the heater, the other may be unplugged or something.
VSS will NOT throw a code red90dx, at least not as far as I know. If you look at the list of codes, which I don't have handy right now, you prolly won't find a VSS code, unless it's a flag that won't throw a CEL.
macdriver, O2 sensors are $$$$$$$ ok, well maybe not THAT much, new OEM NipponDenso ones are if I recall right $150 and $200 (USD of course) respectively at hondaautomotiveparts.com I imagine with your TCC discount at Parkway, you're lookin at about $4-600 at the dealer for both. HOWEVER, emissions equipment by law MUST be covered by the manufacturer for a while after the warranty period, like 7 years I think... so MAYBE just MAYBE they might cover it. Not sure about that. Your alternative is to go to OBD1 computer, rewire your car, and run one O2 non-heated. That's if you plan big mods later on...
Your other alternative is to buy aftermarket universal sensors which still aren't cheap, but check it out at www.clubplug.net
Lemme know what you decide, or what you find. Mind you, I still highly doubt the O2 sensors are REALLY your problems. Your car has other issues, but diagnosing the O2s should be the 1st step. NOTE: O2s can NOT be tested using a regular multimeter, there is something about the voltage that will damage it... you have to have a special low-voltage multimeter or something like that Now... in recent months, have you had any misfires in the engine, high gas consumption, did you remove the sensors for any reason??

Could be something with the computer maybe. Anyways, 2morrow I'm gonna get a diagnostic check done and we'll take it from there. I'm gonna make sure to get the read outs from the volt meter, just incase.
In the Haynes manual there are two Codes for the VSS
P0500
P0501
Both flash 17 times, but they didn't. Only the o2 sensor codes came up.
Now... in recent months, have you had any misfires in the engine, high gas consumption, did you remove the sensors for any reason??
I'll get back with the results 2morrow.
Thanks

If none of the above, it is unlikely that your O2 sensors are damaged... O2s die b/c of undue rich conditions or contamination from fuel additives, or from being taken out.
I'll check some resources tonight at home, I'll tell you tomorrow what I think... k?

Okay.
Came home tonite and started the car to see if theres any problems. It started fine, then I added gas and the lights started to dim and lighten, diem and lighten. The engine also dropped rpm and went back up, abck and forth.
It has to be something electrical. Gonna find out for sure tomorrow.
