Need help asap! Car won't start
Unlike some people I have been trying for the past two weeks to get my car started. I have replaced the cap and rotor on my distributor... still not starting. So I checked the fuel pump to see if it was working, and it is. I had problems with my car not starting last year and the solution was replacing the distributor. As I have 2 distributors that arent working on their own, I installed the new cap and rotor on each, with the same result of the car still not starting. I checked to see if the car was getting spark, and its not. Im still guessing it is the distributor, yet I'm not a mechanic in the least so I cant be certain. I am planning on getting another distributor and trying that instead. Any ideas as to what I might be able to do to solve this problem? Someone had suggested replacing the igniter?? I dont know if this is correct or if it is I dont know where it is located or how to replace it. Could someone help me please?
Thanks, Jeremy. |
is it doing anything at all, sounds when you try to start it?
|
Nope!
And its not the battery either, everything lights up perfectly. Thats why I think its something to do with the ignition system. |
You checked, and there is no spark... that's a good start
There are two things that typically go wrong - bad distributor or bad coil. You said you tried two other distributors... so test your coil. There are test procedures listed in the Chilton and Haynes manuals. Great investment those $20. |
No I tried 2 distributors that I know didnt work before I replaced the cap and rotor. Im still thinking its the distributor.
|
why did u try distributors that didnt work before?
get one that works dude! |
I wanted to see if either worked with a new cap and rotor. How much for the dizzy?
|
full assembly is like 300 bucks...
ok seriously now ... ignition coils do go from time to time and there is a procedure in a haynes manual to replce and test them go get one of those books from crappy tire and your all set. |
my bad CyniKal.Mindset, misread your post, thought it said "got one that works"...
|
Does the engine actually turn over? Get a manual first. Then check the coil, the main relay and the ignition switch. Also check all of your ground wires to ensure none are broken. If none of these work then test the distributor to see if power is getting to it. Actually you can test to see that there is power there first (probably won't be since there is no spark). A $300 part would be kinda expensive to TRY in my opinion.
